German Opava journalism in the interwar period

Abstract:

Dizertační práce se zabývá německým periodickým tiskem vycházejícím v Opavě v l. 1918-1938, tedy v období trvání tzv. první československé republiky. Zdejší periodický tisk zasluhuje pozornost, protože Opava byla od prohraných slezských válek (r. 1742) až do roku 1918 sídelním městem tzv. Rakouského Slezska (v l. 1782-1849 bylo ovšem spojeno s Moravou) a v l. 1918-1928 země Slezské. Ještě v r. 1938 patřila k městům s německou většinou. Německý živel se v Opavě už od přelomu století projevoval radikálně šovinistickými postoji k Čechům, po vzniku Československa v r. 1918 inicioval vznik separatistické provincie Německého Rakouska s názvem Sudetenland a v následujících letech vytvořil početnou voličskou základnu Německé národně socialistické strany dělnické (DNSAP), která byla až do svého rozpuštění v r. 1933 nejsilnější politickou stranou ve městě a úzce spolupracovala s říšskou NSDAP. Německé obyvatelstvo Opavy podporovalo požadavky sudetských Němců na autonomii svých území a na začátku 30. let se většinově přiklonilo k nacionalistické a antisemitské politice říšských nacistů. V polovině 30. let také Opavu ovládla Henleinova Sudetoněmecká strana, která po mnichovském diktátu přivítala přičlenění německých sídelních oblastí ČSR k Třetí říši. Opava se na konci r. 1938 stala sídlem jednoho ze tří vládních obvodů tzv. Sudetské župy. V uvedeném vývoji musel hrát pochopitelně významnou roli i opavský německý periodický tisk. Jakou, na to se zaměřil výzkum, jehož cílem bylo definovat linii šesti nejvýznamnějších německých periodik vycházejících v Opavě. Také v případě opavského německy psaného periodického tisku se ukázalo, že jeho angažovanost v politických požadavcích sudetských Němců nebyla vždy stejná a jednotlivé tituly se svými postoji k autonomistickým požadavkům, velkoněmeckým idejím nebo k nacismu různily. Zprostředkovávaný obraz česko-německých vztahů a postoje opavského německého periodického tisku k československému státnímu zřízení, k byrokracii, k domácím a mezinárodním událostem a k národnostním, sociálním a hospodářským podmínkám života v ČSR jsou zkoumány a demonstrovány na konkrétních novinových textech. Práce se zabývá také angažovaností osobností německé žurnalistiky a jejich politickým přesvědčením, kterým působily na čtenářské masy. Pro pochopení účinku působení německého periodického tisku a německých novinářů ve zvoleném regionu posloužily také další pramenné zdroje, které umožnily komparaci několika úhlů pohledu, jako například dokumenty cenzurních orgánů nebo archivní ročníky konkurenčních českých periodik. Získané poznatky vedou k závěrům, že kromě nacistického a nacionalistického tisku také v Opavě existoval německý demokratický tisk, který se zasloužil o dobrou pověst slezské žurnalistiky a sehrál významnou úlohu v boji proti nacistickému zlu a při obraně demokratického zřízení československého státu. Práce dále přináší řadu nových poznatků k regionální historii Opavy a spádového západního Slezska z období konce 19. a první poloviny 20. století.

Abstract:

This dissertation deals with the German periodical press based in Opava in the period from 1918 till 1938, therefore in the period of the so-called First Czechoslovak Republic. The local periodical press deserves attention, because Opava was (from its loss in the Silesian Wars in 1742 until 1918) the residential city of the so-called Austrian Silesia (in the years 1782-1849 however it was associated with Moravia) and in the years 1918-1928 of the country of Silesia. Yet in 1938 it was one of the cities with the majority of the Germans´ residents. At the turn of the century the German influence in Opava showed radically chauvinist attitude towards Czechs. After the establishment of Czechoslovakia in 1918 this German influence initiated the establishment of the separatist province of German Austria under the name "Sudetenland" and in following years had created a numerous electoral base of German National Socialist Workers' Party (DNSAP), which was (until its cancellation in 1933) the strongest political party in the city and worked closely with Reich NSDAP. The German population of Opava supported the demands of the Sudeten Germans of the autonomy of their territory and in the early 30´s a majority took the side of nationalistic and anti-Semitic politics of the Nazi Reich. In the mid-30´s in Opava also the Henlein's Sudeten German Party took the demands, which welcomed after the Munich Agreement the incorporation of German settlement areas of Czechoslovakia to the Third Reich. At the end of the year 1938 Opava became the residence of one of the three government districts - so-called Sudeten district. In this development had an important role also the German periodical press. And what kind of role it should be, this could answer proper research that was focused on this matter and which had to define the political orientation of the leading German periodicals based in Opava. Also in case of Opava German periodical press was showed that it´s involvement in the political demands of the Sudeten Germans was not always the same and also individual titles with their attitudes towards autonomist demands, German ideas or Nazism were different. Mediated image of Czech-German relations and attitudes of Opava German periodical press to the establishment of the Czechoslovak state, the bureaucracy, the domestic and international incidents and the national, social and economic conditions of life in Czechoslovakia are researched and demonstrated in specific newspaper texts. This dissertation also deals with an involvement of personalities of German journalism and their political conviction, and their impression on the reading masses. For understanding the effect of the influence of German periodicals and German journalists in the selected region served also other sources, which allowed the comparison of several points of view, such as documents of censorship authorities or archival years of competitive Czech periodical press. The scientific knowledges lead to the conclusions that in Opava existed - besides the Nazi and nationalist periodical press - also German democratic press, which contributed to the good reputation of Silesian journalism and played an important role in the fight against Nazi evil and on the defense of democratic establishment of the Czechoslovak state. This dissertation also brings new knowledges for regional history of Opava and particular area of west Silesia from the late 19th and early 20th century.
