A new role of English in education a case study of the First International School of Ostrava

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the position of the English language in today’s world and how its role is changing, especially in education. Exactly what kind of changes these are and what their influence is on the educational systems and programmes is described in the theoretical part. The importance of learning foreign languages in general will not stay without notice here. Introduced is a National plan on learning foreign languages in the Czech Republic and also a new methodology in education Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL). How is CLIL approached in practice is described in the practical part. The First International School of Ostrava is used as a case study for this part. It is shown on this example what needs to be taken into consideration when teaching subjects in a foreign language. The following question is also answered: How is the First International School of Ostrava preparing their students, in term of language learning and English in particular, so it coincides with the requirements of the modern global society.
