Neoformalist Analysis of the film Honkytonk Man

Abstract:

Ve své práci prověřuji, kterak film Honky Tonk Man posouvá hvězdný obraz Clinta Eastwooda a jak se zde tento herec a režisér odklání od svých typických solitérních postav. Také prověřuji výchozí hypotézy o kolektivním rozměru filmu a dualitě protagonistů jako ústředních řídících principech filmu. Kolektivní rozměr je obecnějším rysem filmu, který zasahuje za rámec ústřední dvojice protagonistů. Kolektivní rozměr se objevuje v cílech postav, v hypotézách a také v hudebních vystoupeních. Clint Eastwood (Red) je součástí daného kolektivu a je mu formálně nadřazen. Film tedy pracuje s dynamikou mezi kolektivností (postav) a formální nadřazeností Reda (ve vyprávění a stylu). Dalším řídícím principem je dualita protagonistů mezi Redem a Whitem. Oba jsou ve vyprávění navzájem provázaní a také se navzájem přímo ovlivňují, potřebují se navzájem, doplňují se a rovněž si pomáhají. Honky Tonk Man specificky posouvá hvězdný obraz Eastwooda a jeho pozici ve vyprávění tím, že postava dospěle uvažujícího Whita pomáhá kontrastovat Redovu nespolehlivost a nezodpovědnost ve vztahu k Eastwoodovým solitérním postavám z filmů, které ještě sám nerežíroval.

Abstract:

In my work, I examine how the film Honky Tonk Man shifts the star image of Clint Eastwood and how this actor and director moves away from his typical solitaire characters. I also examine the underlying hypotheses about the collective dimension of the film and the duality of the protagonists as the central guiding principles of the film. The collective dimension is a more general feature of the film, which extends beyond the central pair of protagonists. The collective dimension appears in the characters' goals, in hypotheses and also in musical performances. Clint Eastwood (Red) is part of the collective and is formally superior to it. The film therefore works with the dynamic between the collectivity (of the characters) and the formal superiority of Red (in narrative and style). Another guiding principle is the duality of the protagonists between Red and Whit. They are both interconnected in the narrative and also directly influence each other, need each other, complement each other and help each other. Honky Tonk Man specifically shifts the star image of Eastwood and his position in the narrative by helping to contrast the adult-minded character of Whit with Red's unreliability and irresponsibility in relation to Eastwood's solitary characters from films he has not yet directed himself.
