Development and Prognosis of the Political Status of the Faroe Islands

Abstract:

Dánské království se skládá ze tří celků: vlastního Dánska, Grónska a Faerských ostrovů. Faerské ostrovy leží v severovýchodní části Atlantského oceánu a jsou autonomním územím Dánského království. Faeřané jsou malým rybářským národem čítající asi 50 tisíc obyvatel. Faerský národ začal projevovat koncem 19. století silné nacionalistické tendence vůči Dánsku, které trvají do dnešních dnů. Na jejich základě získaly v roce 1948 Faerské ostrovy autonomii, jež je od té doby rozšiřována na stále více oblastí jejich správy. Souostroví tak začíná stále více připomínat plně nezávislý stát. Hlavní cílem této práce je zjistit, zda mají Faeřané na ustanovení takového státu vůbec právní nárok a zda se v budoucnosti vyhlášení jejich nezávislosti dočkáme. Práce se tedy bude nejdříve zabývat teoretickými principy národa a státu, právem na jeho sebeurčení a formami autonomie. Následně rozebere politický a historický vývoj Faerských ostrovů se zřetelem na nacionalismus, politické stranictví a měnící se vztahy k Dánsku. Představí také faerskou politickou správu a její zásady i fungování Faerských ostrovů v mezinárodních vztazích. Z důvodu jednostranně zaměřeného hospodářství a finanční závislosti na dánských dotacích, se dnes ovšem zdá, že největší překážka na cestě k vlastní nezávislosti leží v ekonomické rovině. K hledání odpovědi na potenciální faerskou nezávislost můžeme tedy přistoupit až po analýze faerské ekonomiky.

Abstract:

Kingdom of Denmark consists of three parts: Denmark itself, Greenland and Faroe Islands. Faroe Islands lie in the northeast part of the Atlantic ocean and are autonomy territory of Kingdom of Denmark. Faroes are small fishery nation with population of 50 000. In the end of 19th century, this nation started to manifest strong nationalistic tendencies towards Denmark, which last up-to-date. On it´s background, Faroe Islands acguire autonomy in 1948, which is still extending to more fields of their administration. The archipelago starts to remind completely independent state. The main aim of this thesis was to find out, whether the Faroes have the legal right to be independent, and whether we can expect the declaration of independence in the future. At first, the thesis deals with theoretical principles of the nation and the state, right of self-determination and forms of autonomy. Consequently, it analyses political and historical development of Faroe Islands with aspect of nacionalism, political party spirit and constantly changing relations with Denmark. It also introduces faroese political administration and it´s principles, and also role of Faroe Islands in the international relations. Due to one-sided economy and financial dependence on danish subsidies, it seems today, that the biggest barrier on the way to independence lies on economic level. We can look for an answer about potential faroese independence after analysis of faroese economy.
