On Cognitive Synonymy: A Case Study (Broad and Wide)

Anotácia:

The aim of this thesis is to examine two adjectives – broad and wide. It concentrates on the semantic differences between these adjectives and their collocational possibilities. Although broad and wide can be interchangeable in some contexts, there are many examples where it is not possible. This thesis thus tries to show in what aspects these so-called synonyms differ and what their collocational restrictions are. The analysis is based on the material from the British National Corpus.
