Using the texts of Madonna for the purposes of teaching English grammar at B1 level

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce je zaměřena na používání písní zpěvačky Madonny v hodinách výuky anglického jazyka studentů na úrovni B1. Bakalářská práce je rozdělena na dvě hlavní části: část teoretickou a praktickou. V teoretické části je popsáno, jak se obecně přistupuje k poslechu, gramatice a písním v hodinách angličtiny a také, jak se s těmito okruhy pracuje. Rovněž je zde stručně popsána základní terminologie. V praktické části jsou představeny tři vyučovací hodiny, které se zaměřují na uvození gramatického jevu prostřednictvím poslechu s využitím tří různých textů zpěvačky Madonny. Každá hodina se zabývá jiným gramatickým jevem. Na konci praktické části bylo stanoveno, zda se užití písní v tomto kontextu osvědčilo či neosvědčilo a zda je využití textů zpěvačky Madonny vhodné k výuce gramatiky či ne.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis deals with using the songs of Madonna for the purposes of teaching English grammar to the students at level B1. The thesis is divided into two parts: theoretical and practical. In the theoretical part general approaches to listening, grammar and songs in English lessons are described and also suggestions for working with listening, grammar and songs together. Basic terminology is explained in this part. In the practical part there are introduced three lessons which focus on introducing a grammatical item through listening to three different Madonna’s songs. Each lesson deals with a different grammatical item. At the end of the practical part we examine whether the use of songs in this context proved to be useful or not and whether it is suitable to use Madonna’s songs for teaching grammar.
