Impacts of the minimum wage on the labor market in selected EU countries

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá existencí vztahu mezi minimální mzdou a ukazateli trhu práce v několika zemích EU. Teoretická část představuje přehled studií o dopadech zavedení minimální mzdy na trh práce, zaměřuje se na míru nezaměstnanosti, HDP a inflaci. Vliv minimální mzdy byl analyzován pomocí Kaitzova indexu na časových řadách v České republice, na Slovensku a v Německu. Výsledky neu-kázaly významný vliv změn minimální mzdy na tyto makroekonomické ukazatele. Souhrnná analýza zemí EU s minimální mzdou naznačuje jen slabou souvislost mezi minimální mzdou a mírou nezaměstnanosti a HDP, avšak s opačným výsledkem než uvádí teorie. Vliv na inflaci nebyl prokázán vůbec.

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis deels with the existence of a relationship between minimum wages and labour market indicators in selected EU countries. The theoretical part presents a review of studies on the impact of minimum wages on the labour market, focusing on unemployment rates, GDP and inflation. The impact of the minimum wage was analysed using the Kaitz index on time series in the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Germany. The results showed no significant effect of changes in the minimum wage on these macroeconomic indicators. A summary analysis of EU countries with minimum wages suggests only a weak link between minimum wages and unemployment rates and GDP, but with the opposite result to the theory. The effect on inflation has not been demonstrated at all.
