Repertoire of characters in Roman Comedy: palliata, togata, atellana, mimus.

Abstract:

Tato disertační práce pojednává o římské komedii, jejích formách a dramatických postavách. Snažila jsem se popsat povahu římské komedie na základě analýzy repertoáru postav všech jejích variant: na Plautovy a Terentiovy palliaty jsem uplatnila analýzu kontrastních a korespondenčních vztahů „dramatis personarum“ a komických situací na základě funkcí typů postav v nich. Fragmentární materiál jsem roztřídila tak, abych mohla porovnat komické formy podle charakteristik postav zjistitelných z neúplného textu: podle substantiv a adjektiv, která mohla popisovat postavy („slova-znaky“), jsem jej roztřídila do čtyř skupin. Aplikovaná analýza kontrastních a korespondenčních vztahů v Plautových a Terentiových textech mi především umožnila definovat každý typ postav zvlášť souhrnem znaků a funkcí, určit tak míru toho, jak se podílí na komické situaci a tím významně upřesnit jeho charakteristiku. Kromě zajímavých dílčích výsledků bylo možné porovnáním těchto charakteristik s výskytem „slov-znaků“ v ostatních římských komických formách stanovit, jak se její repertoár postav diachronicky obměňoval: nejdříve byla jeho výrazným rysem typizace, která přisuzovala postavám typické, nikoliv individuální vlastnosti: typy postav měly podobné charakteristiky v palliatách a togatách, i když mezi postavami togat zaujímaly důležité postavení také ženské role. Později se komická síla typizace projevila ještě v atellanách, avšak typy v nich měly už konkrétní příznačná jména: ustálené postavy „personae oscae“ mohly sdružovat pod každým jménem komické povahové a fyzické rysy lidí z nejchudších vrstev odrážejících italické prostředí, z kterého vzešly. Komický efekt v atellanách možná také zajišťovala záměna a převlek, dramatické prostředky využívané hojně v Plautových palliatách. Zdá se, že nakonec typizace přestává hrát významnou roli: typy definované na Plautových a Terentiových textech v mimech zřejmě nejsou důležité, protože zde najdeme velmi málo podobností. Nejblíže mohly mít postavy z mimů asi k prostému lidu z atellan: představovaly chudé lidi s různorodými defekty a komickými vlastnostmi vykonávající nuzná povolání, což - doprovázeno šikovnou mimikou a pohybovou expresivitou - mohlo přispět k tomu, že ze všech forem římské komedie se mimus udržel v oblibě značně různorodého publika nejdéle.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the Roman Comedy, its forms and “dramatis personae”. I have tried to describe the nature of the Roman Comedy analysing the repertory of the characters in all its forms. The Plautus’ and Terence’s texts have been analysed using the method of contrasts and correspondences and also the technique of structural functions of the characters in dramatic situations. I have classified the fragmentary material into four groups based on the substantives and adjectives (“words-signs”) from the fragments, which could denote the nature of the character.The applied analysis enabled me not only to determine better the types of the characters from the surviving texts by the sum of the signs and functions, but also to compare these observations with the “words-signs” from the fragments. Thus, except the interessant particular results, I could formulate how the “dramatis personae” of the Roman Comedy might change diachronically: at first there was a strong influence of the typification which determines the characters by the typical not individual features. These were similar in the “palliata” and “togata”, although it seems that in the “togata” the feminine roles were more important. The typification was also significant in the “atellana”, but here the stock characters had specific names that could associate comic physical and personality features of the poor people from the Italic ambient. It is possible that the comic effect in the “atellana” was supported even by dramatic techniques used mostly by Plautus, such as the “qui pro quo” and the disguise. In the end, the types were not so important in the “mimus” - there is little correspondence with the “palliata”. The characters of the mime shared a common feature with the “atellana”: the appearance of rude folk with various defects practising crude work occupations. It is possible that this feature together with the eloquent corporal expressivity could have supported the greatest popularity of this comic form of the Roman Comedy.
