Decision-making under conditions of risk in knowledge competition

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zaměřuje na zkoumání averze k riziku u soutěžících na základě vědomostní soutěže “Chcete být milionářem?“, vzhledem k využití nápovědy 50/50. Cílem práce je zjistit, zdali jsou někteří účastníci více averzní k riziku a zda existují statisticky významné rozdíly v jejich přístupu k riziku v závislosti na pohlaví, počtu dětí, rodinném stavu, soutěžní a výchozí částce a dalších nezávislých proměnných. Výzkum je proveden na základě logistické regresní analýzy za použití vzorku 200 soutěžících. Výsledky vykazují statisticky významný vztah na pravděpodobnost riskování v případě použití nápovědy 50/50 u jedinců vzhledem k počtu dětí, rodinnému stavu, soutěžní i výchozí částce. Dále je model rozdělen na detailnější analýzu v počtu 169 soutěžících, jež využívali nápovědu 50/50 v sekci s nízkými sázkami a v počtu 31 soutěžících, jež využívali tuto nápovědu v sekci s vysokými sázkami. V případě modelu s nízkými sázkami existuje statisticky významný vztah na pravděpodobnost riskování vzhledem k počtu dětí, naproti tomu v případě modelu s vysokými sázkami vzešel statisticky významný vztah mezi použitím nápovědy 50/50 a pravděpodobností riskování u proměnné značící rozlohu bydliště. Pohlaví nevykazuje statisticky významný vliv na pravděpodobnost riskování v případě použití nápovědy 50/50 u soutěžících v žádném z modelů.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis focuses on exploring risk aversion among contestants based on the quiz show “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?” with regard to the use of the 50/50 lifeline. The aim of the study is to determine whether some participants are more risk- averse and if there are statistically significant differences in their approach to risk based on gender, number of children, marital status, the competition and starting amount, and other independent variables. The research is conducted using logistic regression analysis with a sample of 200 contestants. The results indicate a statistically significant relationship to the probability of taking risks when using the 50/50 lifeline concerning the number of children, marital status, as well as the competition and starting amount. Furthermore, the model is divided for a more detailed analysis, with 169 contestants using the 50/50 lifeline in the low-stakes section and 31 contestants using it in the high- stakes section. In the low-stakes model, there is a statistically significant relationship with the probability of taking risks in relation to the number of children, whereas in the high-stakes model, a statistically significant relationship emerged between the use of the 50/50 lifeline and the probability of taking risks regarding the variable indicating the area of residence. Gender does not exhibit a statistically significant impact on the probability of taking risks when using the 50/50 lifeline among contestants in any of the models.
