Graphic works by Augustin Tschinkel in the context of modern design (1928-1940)

Abstract:

Cílem bakalářské práce byla studie avantgardních projevů v díle umělce Augustina Tschinkela (1905-1983). Tschinkel úzce spolupracoval s Ladislavem Sutnarem, ve své práci zkoumal zejména možnosti ikonického znázornění a možnosti kombinování abstraktních, předmětných a fonetických znaků. První část práce je věnována východiskům, která se ukázala jako stěžejní pro Tschinkelovy inovativní myšlenky, které plně rozvinul v období 1928-1940. Jako zásadní se ukázala autorova orientace na konstruktivistický umělecký výraz, který se v 2. polovině 20. let rodil v Kolíně nad Rýnem. Druhým stěžejním proudem, který ovlivnil umělcovu činnost byl ideologický projekt Sociologicko–ekonomického muzea ve Vídni, které založil sociolog Otto Neurath. Ústřední část práce je věnována konkrétním dílům a publikančím aktivitám Augustina Tschinkela v širším kontextu vývoje moderního designu. Účelem práce bylo zhodnotit Tschinkelův umělecký přínos v této oblasti.

Abstract:

The goal of this Thesis is to highlight the avant-garde elements in the work of Augustin Tschinkel. Tschinkel was involved in the close circle of designer Ladislav Sutnar for several years & collaborated on various works with Sutnar, who is now considered one of the central figures in the birth of Modern Graphic Design. At this time Tschinkel was exploring methods of icon depiction, especially the possibilities of combining Abstract, Concrete & Phonetic signs. The first part of the thesis is devoted to the bases concepts underlying Tschinkels innovative ideas, which he fully evolved in the years 1928-1940. Tschinkels stylistic orientation was towards Constructivist Aesthetics as interpreted by The Köln Progressives of which he was a member in the 1920's. The second flow of ideas which strongly influenced Tschinkel was the ideological project of the Socio-Economic Institute in Vienna that was set up by the Sociologist Otto Neurath. The core part of this Thesis is devoted to particular art works and theoretical studies by Augustin Tschinkel presented in the context of the development of Modern Design. The intention of the work is to evaluate Tschinkel's artistic contribution in this area.
