Needs of parents of children with cancer

Abstract:

Cíl: Cílem diplomové práce bylo identifikovat potřeby rodičů dětí s onkologickým onemocněním a vnímání těchto potřeb zdravotnickými pracovníky. Metodika: První výzkumný soubor byl tvořen 100 rodiči onkologicky nemocných dětí, hospitalizovanými společně s dítětem, nebo rodiči přítomnými na ambulanci ve Fakultní nemocnici v Ostravě a ve Fakultní nemocnici v Praze Motole. Druhý výzkumný soubor byl tvořen 70 sestrami pracujícími s onkologicky nemocnými dětmi a jejich rodinami ve Fakultní nemocnici v Ostravě a ve Fakultní nemocnici v Praze Motole. Byl použit modifikovaný standardizovaný dotazník NPQ (Needs of Parents Questionnaire). Dotazníkové šetření probíhalo od 1. června 2011 do 30. září 2011. Výsledky: Výsledky dotazníkového šetření prokázaly, že se vyskytují rozdílnosti ve vnímání důležitosti potřeb mezi rodiči onkologicky nemocných dětí a zdravotníky na vybraných odděleních a ambulancích (dětské hematologie a hematoonkologie a dětské hematologie a onkologie) ve Fakultní nemocnici v Ostravě a ve Fakultní nemocnici v Praze Motole. Největší rozdíly byly zaznamenány v potřebách týkajících se psychické podpory rodičů ze strany sester, naděje ohledně stavu dítěte, včasné informovanosti o vyšetřeních a kvality vzdělávání dítěte, kdy rodiče přikládali těmto potřebám větší důležitost, než sestry. Závěr: Uspokojování potřeb rodičů onkologicky nemocných dětí velmi významně ovlivňuje chování, jednání a prožívání rodičů, následně také kvalitu poskytované psychosociální podpory při léčbě jejich onkologicky nemocného dítěte. Výsledky výzkumu prokazují, že problematika potřeb rodičů onkologicky nemocných dětí má stále značné rezervy a měla by se jí proto i nadále věnovat pozornost.

Abstract:

Aim: The aim of this diploma thesis was to identify the needs of parents of children with oncological diseases and the perception of these needs by medical staff. Methodology: The first research group was made up of 100 parents of children with oncological diseases who were hospitalized together with their children and parents who were present at the emergency rooms at the University Hospital in Ostrava and the University Hospital Motol in Prague. The second research group was made up of 70 nurses who work with oncologically ill children and their families at the University Hospital in Ostrava and the University Hospital Motol in Prague. I used a modified standardized questionnaire NPQ (Needs of Parents Questionnaire). The questionnaire was carried out from June 1, 2011 till September 30, 2011. Results: The results of the questionnaire showed that there exist differences in the perception of the importance of needs between parents of children with oncological diseases and medical staff at chosen departments and emergency rooms (Pediatric Hematology and Hemato-oncology and Pediatric Hematology and Oncology) at the University Hospital in Ostrava and the University Hospital Motol in Prague. The biggest differences were noticed in the needs concerning psychological support for parents by nurses, hope for child condition, being informed on time about check-ups and quality of child?s education, when parents attached a bigger importance to these needs than nurses. Conclusion: The satisfaction of the needs of parents with oncologically ill children affects parent behaviour and feelings very significantly and then also the quality of given psychosocial support during treatment of their oncologically ill children. The research results showed that there are substantial gaps in the problems regarding the needs of parents with oncologically ill children and therefore, these problems should be paid attention to.
