Anti-Consumerism and Anti-Conformism in American Literature of the 1950s and 1960s

Abstract:

In spite of mankind's ability to make life go on in an undisturbed and peaceful way, the world we are living in is the world of confusion, disparity and constant uneasiness. It is the world ruled by fear and thirst for money, power, fame, and the other outer things that cannot ever compensate for the great inner loss that has afflicted humanity. The thesis therefore deals with the tradition in American literature, which holds that the missing part that may put an end to all world conflicts and bring a global peace is to be found within the Heart Beat of every single man. The key approach then is to analyze the works by the authors of the 19th-century Transcendentalism and the postwar Beat and hippie generations, in order to prove that the value of their legacy is ever-increasing, and that it will be relevant for many years to come, until man renounces once and for all the long drawn-out materialistic vision of happiness that underpins today's world, in which we have to live.

Abstract:

Přestože lidstvo má veškeré předpoklady k tomu vést ničím nerušený a spokojený život, svět, v němž ve skutečnosti žijeme, je světem zmatku, nesourodosti a permanentního neklidu. Je to svět, v němž panuje strach a touha po penězích, moci, slávě a ostatních vnějších věcech, které nikdy nenahradí velkou vnitřní ztrátu, jíž je lidstvo sužováno. I z toho důvodu se práce zabývá tou tradicí v americké literatuře, jež chápe, že ta chybějící část, která je s to učinit všem konfliktům přítrž a nastolit světový mír, dřímá v Hlasu Srdce tlukoucího v každém z nás. Práce tedy zkoumá díla představitelů transcendentalismu 19. století a autorů poválečné generace beatniků a hippies, aby poukázala na to, že hodnota jejich odkazu neustále roste a sílí a že bude aktuální po mnoho dalších let, až dokud se člověk jednou provždy nevzdá té své neúnavně táhlé materialistické vize o štěstí, jež utváří dnešní svět, v němž musíme žít.
