Cost-benefit analysis of renewable energy in Bangladesh

Abstract:

This study critically analyses the cost and benefit analysis of renewable energy in Bangladesh by considering financial, environmental, and socio-economic aspects. The results suggest that renewable energy projects, especially solar PV systems, have a great economic viability on the long-term due to the large initial capital expenditure. This analysis indicates that increasing renewable systems can produce around 15, 768 MWhs of electricity in a year resulting in a projected 11,038 tonnes of CO2 emission reduction each year. At an average carbon price of 80 per tonne being monetised, it translates to an environmentally beneficial amount of approximately 883, 040 per annum, a strong indicator of indirect economic benefits. Financially, renewable energy projects have good Net Present Value (NPV) and positive Return on Investment (ROI) throughout their life. Despite having high costs of capital, reduced operational and maintenance costs, and free fuel costs prices will save on costs over the long run than fossil fuel-based systems. The Levelized Cost of Electricity (LCOE) of a solar will fall below gas and coal by the late 2020s, further ensuring its competitiveness. Also, renewable energy will minimise the reliance on imported fuels which constitute more than 90 % of the electricity production at present and this will enhance the energy security and stabilisation of the electricity prices. Renewable deployment leads to rural electrification, promotes productivity and opens job opportunities in the areas of installation, maintenance, and operation, socio-economically. Comprehensively, the study finds out that renewable energy offers quantifiable economic dividends, substantial carbon savings, and sustainability benefits. It would be important to realise energy security and sustainable growth in Bangladesh with the right energy policy and infrastructure in place.
