Secondary Female Characters in the Works of Three Canadian Women Authors

Anotace:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá třemi romány známých kanadských spisovatelek 20. století: Cat’s Eye od Margaret Atwood, The Stone Angel od Margaret Laurence a Lives of Girls and Women od Alice Munro. Cílem této práce je komparativní analýza vedlejších ženských postav zobrazených ve vyjmenovaných textech prostřednictvím rozdělení těchto postav do následujících kategorií: nejlepší kamarádky, matky a dcery, ženy jako náboženské symboly, fiktivní a imaginární ženy a tak zvané „padlé ženy“, které jsou definovány jako všechny ženy poznamenané svým selháním v dané genderové roli, která od nich byla očekávána. Tato práce porovnává způsob, jakým autorky tyto vedlejší postavy zobrazují, a role, které tyto postavy plní jak v příběhu, tak v rozvíjení hlavní postavy. Texty jsou rovněž zasazeny do kontextu feministické literatury – práce popisuje, jak jsou v nich zobrazeny různé ženské genderové stereotypy a jak je toto zobrazení využito ke kritice patriarchální kultury.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis examines three novels by well-known 20th-century Canadian women authors: Cat’s Eye by Margaret Atwood, The Stone Angel by Margaret Laurence and Lives of Girls and Women by Alice Munro. The goal of this thesis is to present a comparative analysis of the way secondary female characters are portrayed in these novels, identifying several distinctive character types which appear across all three texts: best friends doubling as worst enemies, mother figures and daughter figures, women as religious symbols, fictional and imaginary women and finally, the so-called ‘fallen women’ who are marked by their inability to fulfill an expected gender role. The thesis compares and contrasts the ways in which the authors portray these character types, the role they give them in their story and the ways in which they use them to develop the character of their protagonist.The thesis also sets the novels into the context of feminist literature by commenting on the gender stereotypes represented by the female characters as well as on the way these female characters are used to offer a critique of patriarchal culture.
