Workers´ Gymnastic Union from the beginning to the compulsory end

Abstract:

Disertační práce se zabývá několika aspekty fungování Dělnických tělocvičných jednot primárně orientovaných na české země. Časově je vymezena lety 1897?1939, i když v několika případech přesahuje uvedený časový rámec. Práce nejprve stručně představuje historii spolku, včetně jeho vnitřního fungování. Na základě odborné literatury, a především archivních a tištěných pramenů, disertační práce přináší odpovědi na několik badatelských otázek. Pozornost věnuje počátkům dělnické tělovýchovy a také spojitosti spolku se sociální demokracií, včetně ideologického rozvratu tělocvičného uskupení a následků z toho plynoucích. V souvislosti s politickou stranou poukáže i na její personální propojení s tělocvičným sdružením. Krátce zkoumá i vztahy komunistické tělovýchovy a komunistické strany, a to i v případě personálního propojení. Dalšími tématy jsou úloha žen a jejich postup spolkovou strukturou, postavení sportu a jeho prosazování do spolkových osnov, vzájemný vztah se Sokolem a také činnost místních jednot spolku na Brněnsku, Ostravsku a Plzeňsku. V poslední kapitole pojednávající o DTJ v uvedených oblastech se disertační práce zaměřuje na počátky dělnické tělovýchovy, strukturu spolku, rozvrat tělocvičného sdružení a spojitost se sociální demokracií. Krátce objasňuje spolupráci vzešlou z těchto tří oblastí a také lokální problémy související s narušením integrity státu v letech 1938?1939.

Abstract:

The dissertation deals with several aspects of the functioning of the Workers' Gymnastics Unions (WGU) primarily focused on the Czech lands. It is limited in time to the years 1897-1939, although in several cases it exceeds the specified time frame. First, the work briefly presents the history of the association, including its internal functioning. Based on professional literature, especially archival and printed sources, the dissertation provides answers to several research questions. It pays attention to the beginnings of workers' physical education and also to the connection of the association with social democracy, including the ideological disintegration of the WGUs and the consequences. In connection with the political party, it also points out its personal connection with the gymnastics association. It also briefly examines the relations between communist physical education and the communist party, even in the case of personnel connections. Other topics are the role of women and their progress through the federal structure, the position of sport and its promotion in the federal curriculum, the mutual relationship with Sokol and also the activities of local associations in the Brno, Ostrava and Pilsen regions. In the last chapter dealing with WGUs in these areas, the dissertation focuses on the beginnings of WGUs, the structure of the association, the breakdown of the gymnastics association and the connection with social democracy. It briefly clarifies the cooperation arising from these three areas, as well as local problems related to the breach of state integrity in the years 1938-1939.
