Role of Religiosity in the Prison Service

Abstract:

Předmětem bakalářské práce je snaha naznačit a popsat otázku úlohy a funkce religiozity ve vězeňství. Chce také ukázat specifičnost vězeňského prostředí a postoje uvězněných osob, které prostřednictvím svých kaplanů hledají nebo našly víru. Východiskem jsou zejména o stanoviska a názory zúčastněných pozorovatelů, vězeňských kaplanů. V menší míře jsou zastoupeny pohledy dalších zaměstnanců věznic, speciálních pedagogů a zástupce vedoucího oddělení výkonu trestu. V úvodu práce je vysvětlení a deskripce teoretických podkladů zvoleného námětu. Týkají se legislativního zakotvení činnosti duchovních ve vězeních České republiky, systému věznic a jejich zaměstnanců a dále také účelem trestu. Na ně navazuje charakteristika občanského sdružení Vězeňská duchovenská péče s důrazem na jeho historii, ekumenický základ a členství v něm. Empirická část obsahuje kvalitativní (heuristickou) studii, jejímž cílem je ověřit, zda přijetí víry není pouze efektivním krokem k získání pozitivnějších podmínek, případně výhod ve vězeňském prostředí nebo pro propuštění. Souvisejícími otázkami jsou vliv hledání a následného přijetí víry na osobu obžalovanou nebo odsouzenou a možnost modifikace chování těchto osob vůči sobě a okolí. Posuzována je také problematika prvotrestaných vězňů a recidivistů. Celá studie je rozdělena do čtyř okruhů. Zahrnují otázky trestu, vězení a religiozity, liturgických úkonů a nalézání víry. Dále také problematiku osob obžalovaných a odsouzených, jejich vzděláváním, zaměstnáním, prožívání volného času a v závěru psychologickými aspekty, jejich povahovými rysy, chováním a jednáním.

Abstract:

Subject of this thesis is to outline and describe the issue of the role and function of religion in prison. It also wants to show the specificity of the prison environment and attitudes of incarcerated persons who through their chaplains are looking for or have found faith. The resource is particularly opinions and views of involved observes, prison chaplains. To a lesser extent are represented the views of other prison staff, teachers and Deputy Head of the Department of the Execution of Punishment. The introduction deals with an explanation and description of the theoretical background of the topic. It relates to the legality of the priests´ impact in the Czech prisons, the system of prisons and their employees, and also the effect of the given sentence. It is followed by the characteristic of the civic association “Prison Religious Care” with an emphasis on its history, an ecumenical basis and membership. The empirical part consists of qualitative (heuristic) study aimed at determining whether the acceptance of faith is not only an effective step to gain more positive conditions or benefits either in prison or after release. Related issues are the impact of searching and subsequent experience in the faith of an accused or convicted person and the prospect of his/her behaviour change towards themselves and other people. There is also assessed the issue of prisoners arrested for the first time and recidivists. The thesis is divided into four headings. It covers the problems of the sentence, imprisonment function of religion, ritual acts and finding faith. It also concerns charged and convicted persons, their education, employment, spending their leisure time. The end of the thesis deals with the psychological aspects, their character traits, behaviour and manners.
