The Mysteries of Paris by E. Sue and their Influence on the Czech Literature of 19th Century

Abstract:

Magisterská diplomová práce pojednává o díle Eugèna Suea a jeho recepci v českých zemích. Dále se zaměřuje na osobnost Karla Sabiny a jeho román Na poušti (Synové světla). Práce přináší podrobnou analýzu Sueova románu Tajnosti pařížské a srovnává s ním román Na poušti. Závěrečná kapitola práce popisuje žánrový synkretismus obou těchto děl. V práci jsou zmíněni také další čeští autoři, kteří mohli být Sueovým dílem ovlivněni. Stručně se zastavuje také u postav kriminálníků v dalším Sabinově díle, románě Král Ferdinand V. Dobrotivý a jeho doba.

Abstract:

This master diploma thesis deals with the work of Eugène Sue and his reception in the Czech lands. The next part of the thesis focuses on the personality of Karel Sabina and his novel In the desert/Sons of light (original title: Na poušti/Synové světla). The thesis provides a comparative interpretation of Sue’s novel The Mysteries of Paris and Sabina’s novel In the desert. The end of the thesis describes a genre syncretism of both of this works. The thesis mentions also the other Czech writers influenced by Sue. There is also a short notion of the criminal characters in the other Sabina’s work: the novel about King Ferdinand I of Austria.
