Barbarians and Indians in Czech travelogues literature of the Baroque and renaissance

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zaměřuje na obrazy Jinakosti cestopisné produkce starší české literatury 16. a 17. století. Součástí práce je i teoretické vymezení žánrové problematiky, stručný popis období renesance a baroka, ale i nastínění koncepce orientalismu, která je v naší práci stěžejní. Zajímat nás pak budou zejména konkrétní postoje k obrazům Jinakosti a komentáře samotných autorů. V první části práce jsme se zabývali renesančními cestopisy, které jsou zastoupeny dílem Oldřicha Prefáta z Vlkanova, Kryštofa Haranta z Polžic a Bezdružic, Václava Vratislava z Mitrovic a překladu cestopisu Jeana de Léryho. V druhé části práce jsme zkoumali listy jezuitských misionářů. Snažíme se v textu najít obrazy barbarů a indiánů v jejich každodenní podobě. Zajímá nás, zda bylo vnímání odlišné kultury ovlivněno orientalismem, či nikoliv. V poslední kapitole se pokoušíme srovnat pohled renesančního a barokního člověka na exotickou kulturu.

Abstract:

The master's thesis focuses on portraying the Other in the travelogues of the 16th and the 17th-century Czech literature. The paper comprises a sketch of the theoretical background of the genre, a brief description of the Renaissance and Baroque periods, as well as an outline of Orientalism, which is essential for the thesis. The core of the research is the authors' attitudes and commentaries concerning the Other. The first part of the thesis covers Renaissance travelogues, which are represented by the works of Oldřich Prefát z Vlkanova, Kryštof Harant z Polžic a Bezdružic, Václav Vratislav z Mitrovic, and by the translation of the piece by Jean de Léry. The second part of the thesis deals with the letters written by Jesuit missionaries. The investigation tries to find images of barbarians and Indians living their casual lives. The main question is whether the perception of a different culture was influenced by Orientalism, or not. The last chapter is dedicated to a comparison of Renaissance and Baroque people's perspectives of the exotic culture.
