Special Relationship? Development of the nuclear partnership between the US and the United Kingdom in the 40s - 60s

Abstract:

Termín „Special Relationship“ označuje unikátní bilaterální vztah mezi Spojenými státy americkými a Velkou Británií. Jedním z jeho základních pilířů se stala již v průběhu druhé světové války úzká spolupráce obou zemí v oblasti rozvoje jaderného programu, která přetrvávala i během studené války. Hlavním cílem bakalářské práce je nastínit vývoj americko-britského nukleárního partnerství od samotného počátku jeho vzniku, tedy první poloviny 40. let do počátku 60. let - období, kdy se vzájemná spolupráce nacházela na svém vrcholu. Práce se současně snaží vztah podrobit analýze prizmatem jedné z klíčových teorií mezinárodních vztahů - realismu. Pozornost je upřena především na skutečné motivy obou stran udržovat a rozvíjet kooperaci v oblasti jaderného vývoje a pragmatické chování států v rámci daného vztahu.

Abstract:

Term “Special Relationship“ refers to unique bilateral relationship between the United States of America and Great Britain. The cooperation in the field of nuclear program established during the World War II had become one of most important part of the relationship and it remained in existence during the whole Cold War era. The main aim of the bachelor’s thesis is to describe development of the U.S.-U.K. nuclear partnership from the very beginning, it means from the early 40s to the early 60s; the era in which the cooperation reached its peak. The thesis simultaneously intends to analyze the nuclear partnership by prism of one of the international relations’ crucial theories – realism. Attention is paid primarily to the real motives for maintaining and intensifying the nuclear cooperation on both sides and to the states’ pragmatic approach to the partnership.
