Referenda on the European Constitutional Treaty: european identity as a perspective of research

Abstract:

Autor této diplomové práce se věnuje problematice referend o Evropské ústavní smlouvě skrze perspektivu konceptu národní a evropské identity. V této souvislosti se především zabývá otázkou, zda rozdílný výsledek referend o tzv. evropské ústavě může mít své kořeny v odlišném charakteru kolektivních identit zemí, v nichž došlo ke konání tohoto lidového hlasování. Na základě svého zkoumání nakonec autor této práce dochází k závěru, že charakter vztahu mezi národní a evropskou identitou (konfliktní či komplementární) v daných zemích skutečně může sloužit ke komparaci výsledků příslušných referend. Občané Francie a Nizozemska, kde byla evropská ústava odmítnuta, disponují méně komplementární národní identitou ve vztahu k identitě evropské, než obyvatelé Španělska a Lucemburska, kde evropská ústava byla v referendu schválena.

Abstract:

Author of this master thesis pays his attention to the matter of referenda on the European Constitutional Treaty through the lenses of the notion of national and european identity. In this context, he deals with the question whether the various results of these referenda on the european constitution could stem from the various character of the respective countrys' collective identities. On the basis of his research the author confirms that the character of the relationship between national and european identity (conflictual or complementary) in the respective countries may serve to the comparison of respective referenda's results. The citizens of France and the Netherlands where the european constitution was rejected dispose with less complementary national identity in relation to the european identity than the citizens of Spain and Luxembourg where the european constitution was approved.
