American Rape Culture and Its Reflection in 13 Reasons Why

Abstract:

Tato práce se soustředí na kulturu znásilňování ve Spojených státech amerických a to především na středních a vysokých školách. Praktická část se zaměřuje na vyobrazení této kultury v kontroverzním seriálu z produkce Netflix 13 Reasons Why. Pro definování kultury znásilňování v tomto seriálu byly stěžejními podklady nejenom statistiky, studie a odborné články týkající se znásilňování, ale také dokument The Hunting Ground. Výsledek těchto studií ukázal, že kultura znásilňování v Americe je zastoupena ve vysoké míře a to nejen na středních a vysokých školách. Závěr poukazuje na to, že seriál 13 Reasons Why zachycuje pravdivé situace a poukazuje na jejich závažnost.

Abstract:

This thesis focuses on rape culture in the U.S.A., especially at high schools and universities. The practical part demonstrates its reflection in the controversial Netflix TV series 13 Reasons Why. Crucial data for defining rape culture were taken not only from statistics, surveys and journals but also from the document The Hunting Ground. Results show that rape culture is represented in America in a very high amount in general and not only at high schools and universities. The conclusion presents that 13 Reasons Why is based on real-life situations that are connected to rape culture and which are highlighted to show their severity.
