Diet of pumpkinseed sunfish (Lepomis gibbosus) in the River Dyje floodplain

Abstract:

Slunečnice pestrá, Lepomis gibbosus (Linnaeus, 1758), je okounkovitá ryba (Centrarchidae) s původním rozšířením v Severní Americe. Do Československa byla zavlečena v roce 1929 s plůdkem kapra. V Evropě tvoří invazní i neinvazní populace. Invazní populace tohoto druhu se velmi obtížně regulují, základním přístupem je proto prevence. Tato práce studuje potravní zvyklosti slunečnice pestré a souvislost potravních zvyklostí s parazitací. Slunečnici jsme lovili v květnu a v červnu 2021 na dvou lokalitách pomocí elektrolovu a analyzovali obsah trávicího traktu. Slunečnice získává převážně živočišnou potravu ze dna a z rostlin. V potravě ryb všech analyzovaných skupin převažovaly larvy pakomárů, které preferuje před ostatními položkami potravní nabídky. Složení potravy slunečnice nemá zásadní vliv na abundanci parazitů. Je možné, že kondice slunečnice se snižuje se zvýšením podílu rostlinných zbytků v potravě. Slunečnice není přímým ohrožením původních druhů ryb, může být ale jejich potravním konkurentem.

Abstract:

Pumpkinseed sunfish Lepomis gibbosus (Linnaeus, 1758), is a fish of Centrarchidae family which is native in North America. It was introduced into Czechoslovakia in 1929 with carp fry. In Europe, it forms invasive and non-invasive populations. Invasive populations of this species are very difficult to regulate, therefore the basic approach for regulation of pumpkinseed dispersal is prevention. This thesis deals with diet of pumpkinseed sunfish and link between diet and parasite infestation. The fish collected from two localities in the Dyje river floodplain during May and June 2021 were processed for analysis of digestive tract content and endoparasite infection. Pumpkinseed sunfish feeds on animal food located on the bottom and on plants. Chironomid larvae prevailed in the diet of all analysed pumpkinseed groups, showing the strong preference compared to other food items. Composition of pumpkinseed diet does not have any influence on parasite abundance. Results of this study indicate that pumpkinseed fitness decreases by increased proportion of plant remains in its diet. Pumpkinseed does not appear to represent a direct threat to native fish species but it can become their food competitor.
