Posttraumatic growth among patients with Diabetes Mellitus

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce sleduje posttraumatický rozvoj (PTG) u pacientů s diagnózou diabetes mellitus I. typu. Teoretická část popisuje etiologii diabetu mellitu I. typu, jeho epidemiologii v kontextu české populace, příznaky a léčbu. Analyzuje také dopady zmíněné choroby na život nemocného a dokládá, že naplňuje charakteristiku traumatické události. Zabývá se podstatou posttraumatického rozvoje a jeho teoretickými modely. Empirická část zkoumá, zda sledované onemocnění ve svých důsledcích přináší, ve shodě s konceptem posttraumatického rozvoje, pacientům i pozitivní změny, a popisujeme vliv sociální opory a dalších proměnných. Míru pozitivních změn zachycovala česká verze dotazníku Posttraumatic Growth Inventory (PTGI), míru sociální opory česká verze dotazníku Social Support Survey (MOS). Výzkumný soubor tvořilo celkem 85 respondentů. Průměrný skór PTG (M = 63,20; SD = 21,39) se při srovnání s výsledky dalších studií zkoumajících PTG u pacientů s chronickými onemocněními jeví jako relativně vysoký a podporuje předpoklad, že u pacientů s diabetem mellitem I. typu dochází k posttraumatickému rozvoji. Statistická analýza neprokázala statisticky významnou souvislost mezi pohlavím a mírou PTG ani mezi délkou onemocnění a mírou PTG. Korelační analýza odhalila signifikantní pozitivní vztah mezi subškálami Praktická intervence (MOS) a Osobnostní růst (PTGI) (r = 0,26), Emocionální blízkost (MOS) a Osobnostní růst (PTGI) (r = 0,26), Emocionální blízkost (MOS) a Nové životní možnosti (PTGI) (r = 0,26). Výzkum však neprokázal, že některá z dimenzí poskytované sociální opory je pozitivním nezávislým signifikantním prediktorem PTG.

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis focuses on the posttraumatic growth (PTG) in patients with diabetes mellitus type 1. The theoretical part of the thesis describes etiology of the diabetes mellitus type 1, its epidemiology in the Czech population, symptoms, and therapy. It is analyzing the impact of the disease on a life of the invalid and demonstrates, that it fills up characteristic of the trauma. It deals with the substance of the posttraumatic growth and its theoretical models. Empiric part of the thesis analyses, if observed illness brings (in agreement with the concept of posttraumatic growth) positive changes for the life of invalid. It describes the influence of social support and other variables. The measurement of the positive changes captures the Czech version of survey Posttraumatic Growth Inventory (PTGI), the measurement of the social support captures the Czech version of the Social Support Survey (MOS). The research group includes 85 respondents in total. Average score PTG (M = 63,20; SD = 21,39) seems to be relatively high in comparison with results of other research focused on PTG in patients with other chronical diseases. It supports our assumption that patients with diabetes mellitus type 1 come thought posttraumatic growth. Statistical analysis did not show the statistically important connection between sex and measurement of PTG, neither between the length of disease and measurement of PTG. Correlation analysis revealed significant positive relation between scale of Tangible Support (MOS) and Personal Strenght (PTGI) (r = 0,26), Affective Social Support (MOS) and Personal Strenght (PTGI) (r = 0,26), Affective Social Support (MOS) and New Possibilities (PTGI) (r = 0,26). Our research did not prove that any of provided social support dimensions is a positive independent significant predictor of PTG.
