The history of mathematical linguistics

Abstract:

Matematická lingvistika je disciplína stojící na pomezí matematiky a jazykovědy. Ačkoliv se jedná o obor poměrně mladý (počátky klademe do 50. let 20. století), můžeme využívání matematických metod v lingvistice vysledovat již hluboko do minulosti (starověk a středověk). Protože o tomto období nacházíme v literatuře jen kusé informace, je cílem předkládané práce tyto historické poznámky shromáždit a seznámit tak čtenáře s různými aplikacemi matematiky v jazykovědě od starověku až do vzniku matematické lingvistiky jako samostatné disciplíny. Práce je rozdělena do dvou kapitol. V kapitole první je blíže osvětlen obor matematická lingvistika a jeho jednotlivé části – lingvistika kvantitativní, algebraická a lingvistika počítačová. Těžiště práce tvoří kapitola druhá, v které jsou podrobně zachyceny významné mezníky historie matematické lingvistiky. Nahlédneme do starověku a středověku, kde hrála důležitou roli kabala a kde nalézáme rovněž počátky takových oborů, jako je kombinatorika či teorie kódování. Rovněž si objasníme pojem frekvence, jeden ze základních pojmů matematické (a zejména kvantitativní) lingvistiky, a ukážeme si některé jeho praktické aplikace (Morseova abeceda, frekvenční slovníky, těsnopis aj.). Dále si představíme ty osobnosti, metody či výsledky, které se významně zasloužily o rozvoj matematické lingvistiky (V. J. Bunjakovskij, A. A. Markov, G. K. Zipf, glottochronologie, teorie informace, problematika sporného autorství atd.). V závěru práce se pak seznámíme s českým přínosem matematické lingvistice. Zmíníme se tu o osobnosti J. A. Komenského, o jedné z prvních hláskových statistik uveřejněné již roku 1831 v časopise Krok, a také Augustinu Seydlerovi, který se pomocí pravděpodobnosti pokusil dokázat nepravost Rukopisů.

Abstract:

Mathematical linguistics is a discipline standing on the boundary between mathematics and linguistics. Although it is quite a new field of study (beginnings date to 1950s), we are able to trace the use of mathematical methods back in the deep past (antiquity and the Middle Ages). Since we are able to find very rare information about those periods, the objective of this thesis is to gather the historical notes and to familiarize the reader with various applications of mathematics in linguistics since the antiquity till the origin of mathematical linguistics as an independent field of study. The thesis is divided into two chapters. The first chapter deals with the explanation of mathematical linguistics and its particular parts - quantitative, algebraic and computational linguistics. The main part of the thesis is the second chapter which is concerned with the most significant turning-points of the history of mathematical linguistics. We will focus our attention on the ancient and medieval times when cabala played a major role and when we find the origins of such fields of study as combinatorics or theory of coding. At the same time we will clarify the term ´frequency´, which is one of the basic terms of mathematical (especially the quantitative) linguistics and we will show some of its practical applications such as Morse code, dictionaries of frequency or stenography. Next, we will introduce personalities, methods or results that have a merit in the development of mathematical linguistics (V. J. Bunjakovskij, A. A. Markov, G. K. Zipf, glottochronology, theory of information, issue of disputed authorship etc.). In the conclusion we will get acquainted with the Czech contribution regarding mathematical linguistics. We will also mention the personality of J.A.Komenský, one of the first sound statistics published already in 1831 in the magazine Krok and also Augustin Seidler who with the help of ´probability´ attempted to prove the nonauthenticity of Manuscripts.
