Evaluation of mechanical properties by use of miniature test specimens "Small Punch" type and early lokalization of operational defects by use of acoustic emission

Abstract:

This disertation thesis describes Small Punch test method (SP test) as well as acoustic emission (AE). SP test method belongs to the group of so called semi-destructive methods which involves careful removal of minimal amount of testing material without the need of additional repairs. Mechanical properties as well as degradation are subsequently evaluated from the removed material. By means of the AE method it is possible to locate degraded parts of the components in operation and subsequently after the SP test sampling in the localized areas it is possible to determine the degree of degradation of the device in operation. Both of these methods are of enormous importance for safe long-term operation of important components and timely prediction of damaged parts such as power plant equipment, petrochemical equipment, transmission systems for distribution of heat and gas, bridge constructions etc. Both methods are described in detail in the theoretical part of this disertation thesis. Practical part is focused on production of test specimens for SP tests as well as determination of empirical correlations between standard specimens and specimens for SP tests. AE part of the thesis is concentrated on monitoring of formation of cracks under fatigue damage because early detection of incipient crack is vital (e.g. cracks in pressure vessels of nuclear power plans, pipelines, etc.).

Abstract:

Tato disertační práce pojednává o metodě Small Punch test (SP test) a o akustické emisi (AE). Metoda SP test patří mezi tzv. semi-destruktivní metody a spočívá v šetrném odebrání minimálního množství materiálu bez dalších nutných. Z odebraného materiálu se následně vyhodnocují mechanické vlastnosti materiálu a degradace. Pomocí metody AE lze lokalizovat degradovaná místa provozovaných komponent a následně odběrem SP testů v lokalizovaných oblastech určit míru degradace provozovaného zařízení. Obě tyto metody mají nesmírý význam pro bezpečný dlouhodobý provoz celospolečensky důležitých komponent a včasnou predikci poškozených dílů, jako jsou např. energetická zařízení, zařízení v petrochemii, přenosové soustavy pro distribuci tepla, plynu, mostní konstrukce, atd. V rešeršní části práce jsou detailně předtsaveny obě metody. Praktická část práce se zabývá výrobou zkušebních těles pro SP testy a stanovováním empirických korelačních vztahů mezi standardními tělesy a tělesy pro SP testy. V oblasti AE je řešeno především monitorování vzniku trhlin při únavovém poškozování, neboť včasná detekce počínajícího růstu trhlin např. na tlakových nádobách jaderných elektráren, potrubí, atp. je nezbytná.
