Spatial Competition of Political Parties in 2006 Czech Chamber of Deputies Election. An Analysis of CSSD Electoral Support

Abstract:

Cílem bakalářské práce je analyzovat volební výsledek ČSSD ve volbách do PS PČR v roce 2006 na základě dostupných teoretických politologických poznatků týkajících se prostorové soutěže politických stran a klíčových vlivů na volební rozhodování. Autor svoji práci odvine od zkoumání pozice volební podpory ČSSD v rovině jednorozměrného pravolevého politického prostoru a programatiky ČSSD. Za prvé představí rozložení českého elektorátu z hlediska levopravého spektra, následně rozložení voličů ČSSD a voličů dalších parlamentních stran v tomto prostoru. Posoudí, zda pozice ČSSD na levopravé ose odpovídá představám voličů, resp. voličů ČSSD. Následně bude analyzovat vztah elektorátu k politickým ideologiím v souvislosti s pozicí těchto voličů na levopravé škále a proklamované volbě strany. Z toho vyvodí prostorový rozsah programatiky ČSSD v kontextu programově ideologických rámců, jak je vnímají voliči. Za druhé představí programatiku ČSSD, včetně idejí a hlavních témat v ní obsažených a zhodnotí, která témata preferovali voliči ve volbách do PS PČR v roce 2006. Na vybraných tématech bude analyzovat, zdali voliči se shodným programovým postojem s ČSSD také sociální demokracii volili. Čerpat bude zejména z datových souborů ze sociologických šetření, programových dokumentů ČSSD, teoretických prací z dané oblasti a dalších zdrojů.

Abstract:

The aim of this Bachelor’s thesis is to analyze the elections results for CSSD (Czech Social Democratic Party) in the 2006 elections to the Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament of the Czech Republic by employing available theoretical findings of political science pertaining to spatial competition of political parties and to key factors influencing decision-making processes during elections. The thesis establishes its arguments on investigating the position of CSSD’s electoral support on the level of one-dimensional left wing-right wing political space and CSSD program platforms. Firstly, the author introduces Czech electorate distribution in terms of left wing-right wing political spectrum, which is followed by an overview of distribution of voters of CSSD as well as by the distribution of voters of other parliamentary parties in this particular space. Further, this thesis discusses whether the position of CSSD on the left wing-right wing axis corresponds with the voter’s preferences and analyzes the electorate’s relations to political ideologies in the light of their positions on the left wing-right wing scale and declared voting preferences. Subsequently, the thesis infers the spatial impact of the platform of CSSD in the context of ideological and program frameworks as they are seen by voters. Secondly, the thesis provides an overview of the program platform of CSSD and its main ideas and topics and assesses what topics voters of CSSD favored in the 2006 elections. Moreover, the thesis uses selected topics and examines whether voters having coincident program mindset with CSSD actually did vote for CSSD. To support its arguments, the thesis draws on data files generated in sociological surveys, program manifestos of CSSD, theoretical works relevant for the discipline and other sources.
