Human Nature in the Renaissance Utopism and Realism

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá pojetím lidské přirozenosti v dílech Leviathan Thomase Hobbese a Utopie Thomase Mora, jež představují dvě odlišné tradice renesančního politického myšlení realismu a utopismu. Poté, co postupně vymezí pojmy utopismu, realismu a lidské přirozenosti se studie zaměří na pojetí člověka a státu prizmatem obou autorů, aby bylo v závěrečné kapitole prostřednictvím srovnávací analýzy možné posoudit vztah mezi předpokládanými koncepcemi lidské přirozenosti a preferovanou podobou státní společnosti. Výsledky tohoto srovnání zároveň umožní identifikovat míru koherence obou těchto děl se základními atributy výše zmíněných směrů politického myšlení.

Abstract:

The Bachelor thesis examines the concept of human nature in Thomas Hobbes's Leviathan and Thomas More's Utopia, works that represent two different traditions of Renaissance political thought - realism and utopism. After defining the concepts of utopism, realism and human nature, the study describes the conceptions of man and state according to Hobbes and More. In the last chapter, a comparative analysis is used to clarify the relationship between the assumed conceptions of human nature and the desired form of a state society. At the same time, this comparison enables us to find the degree of coherence between those works and the basic features of both aforementioned streams of political thought.
