Managing currency risk in export/import oriented company

Abstract:

This master thesis is focused on the issue of exchange rate risk as an important factor for every export-oriented company to consider, and defines the basic terminology as well as the methods of identification or quantification of this kind of risk. First of all, exchange rate market will be theoretically analysed with its basic functions and the functions of the exchange rate itself in the context of exchange rate regimes and exchange rate theories. Secondly, the chapter on exchange rate risk will more deeply describe its identification, measurement and management. Subsequently, internal and external methods of exchange rate risk management will be examined respectively wherein the primary goal will be to clarify the role of financial derivatives in managing the exchange rate as recent decades have shown that these methods are gaining on popularity and importance the most. Within the practical part, the theoretical knowledge elaborated in the theoretical part will be applied into the real business perspective. The analysed company will be looked upon from the critical standpoint where its current approach towards the exchange rate risk will be compared with its main financial indicators. Finally, I will offer a new design for optimization of exchange rate risk management for this company.

Abstract:

Práca sa zameriava na problematiku kurzového rizika, v prvej časti sa snaží priblížiť devízový trh a jeho základné funkcie, následne sa zameriava na menový kurz a to konkrétnejšie na systémy a teórie menového kurzu. Časť venovaná otázkam kurzového rizika sa ďalej orientuje na jeho identifikáciu, meranie a následné riadenie. Ďalšia kapitola teoretickej časti tejto práce je zameraná na interné metódy, v rámci ktorých sa dá tento druh rizika riadiť. V rámci externých metód sa práca zameriava na problematiku finančných derivátov, ktoré sa stávajú čoraz častejším spôsobom spoločností v rámci zabezpečenia voči kurzovému riziku. V praktickej časti sa snažím aplikovať teoretické poznatky týkajúce sa riadenia rizík na konkrétnu spoločnosť a popísať hlavné finančné ukazovatele spoločnosti, priblížiť spôsob jej riadenia voči kurzovému riziku a v závere praktickej časti sa pokúsim navrhnúť riešenia ku zoptimalizovaniu riadenia kurzového rizika vo vybranej spoločnosti.
