Robet Pinget: Architruc, Translation and Stylistic Analysis

Abstract:

Dramatist creation of Robert Pinget is usually considered to be so-called Absurd drama, i.e. along with e.g. Samuel Beckett, Eugène Ionescu and other important authors. R. Pinget wrote the play Architruc in 1964 and it has been presented several times since then. It is probably impossible to translate in one Czech word the name Architruc in a way that would contain the same connotations as the original and, therefore, the play is presented under the title King and Baga. The main intent, however, is to introduce an outlook at Absurd theater and R. Pinget's work to a Czech reader, as well as an endeavour to present this play on a scene. King and Baga is a commedy about two main characters (King and Baga), two circumstantial and several fictional - those are consecutively represented by Baga, who is a faithful minister and a devoted friend of the King and who is changing dresses constantly and passing into other roles, in order to bring distraction to the King, because the latter is old and bored. Some kind of a play in play with several humorous situations arises. Few plays or novels by R. Pinget were translated to Czech so far, despite the fact that this French author (born in Geneva) received several literature awards during his life already (Critique Award, Femina, Grand National Prize for Literature) and one his play La Manivelle was transtated in English by Samuel Beckett as The Old Tune.

Abstract:

Dramatická tvorba Roberta Pingeta bývá řazena mezi tzv. Absurdní drama, tedy společně např. s tvorbou Samuela Becketta, Eugèna Ionesca a dalších významných autorů. Hru Architruc napsal R. Pinget v roce 1964 a od té doby se jí dostalo několik uvedení. Hlavním záměrem však je přiblížit českému čtenáři pohled na Absurdní divadlo a tvorbu R. Pingeta, stejně tak jako usilovat o uvedení této hry na některé scéně. Přeložit název Architruc, tak aby v jednom českém slově obsahoval tytéž konotace jako ve svém původním znění je asi nemožné, a proto je hra uvedena pod titulem Král a Baga. Král a Baga je komedie o dvou hlavních postavách (Král a Baga), dvou vedlejších a několika smyšlených – ty postupně představuje Baga, který je věrným ministrem a oddaným přítelem Krále a neustále se převléká a přestupuje do jiných rolí, aby přinesl Králi rozptýlení, protože ten už je starý a nudí se. Vzniká tak jakýsi druh divadla na divadle s několika různými humornými situacemi. Z divadelních her či románů R. Pingeta bylo zatím do češtiny přeloženo jen velmi málo, přestože tento francouzský autor (avšak narozený v Ženevě) obdržel, ještě za svého života, několik literárních ocenění (Cena kritiky, Femina, Velká státní cena za literaturu).
