Stabilization of settlement structure in the High Middle Ages in Central Europe

Abstract:

Proces transformace osídlení ve vrcholném středověku výrazně ovlivnil podobu sídelní sítě a v mnoha směrech jí vtiskl současnou podobu. V dnešní krajině potkáváme mnoho stop tohoto procesu, většina z nich je však čitelná jen díky archeologickým a historickým metodám. Hlavní roli v poznání starší vrstvy osídlení hrají relikty raně středověkých vesnic, ležící z větší části na plochách současných polí. Pomocí metod nedestruktivní archeologie, zejména povrchových sběrů, je možné tyto relikty najít a analyzovat. Geografické informační systémy v kombinaci s GPS zde nabízejí klíčový nástroj, sloužící v první řadě k optimální evidenci dat a jejich srovnání s parametry přírodního prostředí. Další úroveň představují postupy, umožňující odlišení původních keramických zlomků ze zaniklých sídlišť od přemístěné keramiky, která se na lokalitu dostala při hnojení polí. Studium geografického rámce transformace v měřítku mikroregionů umožňuje porozumět některým příčinám procesu sídlení proměny a důvodům lokalizace sídel zaniklých i dosud existujících.

Abstract:

The settlement transformation in the high Middle Ages was a widespread process which influenced almost all parts of medieval society. One of the most important questions is the localization of early medieval settlements and their character. The first GIS based part in the work is delimitation of sites or assessments of natural processes and their impact on the structure of archaeological sources. Special tools were employed for quantifiyng the dispersal of particular classes of ceramic potsherds. It enables to distinguish between artefacts with the origin from the former habitation site and the ceramic debris spread over the field by the manuring in later times Basic models of relation of settlement and natural environment were formulated in the second GIS segment of this paper focused on analysis of larger landscape transects. Chosen models showed differences between positions of the Early and the High Middle Ages settlements in altitude, slope and hydrological potential.
