"The Silent Heroines" of Charter 77: Gender in the Czech Dissident Movement

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá občanským disentem žen v období tzv. normalizace, přičemž na disent nahlíží jako na genderované pole, v němž ženy-intelektuálky sehrávaly rozličné role. Na příkladu činnosti v rámci hnutí Charty 77 sleduje překračování genderových normativních hranic, a to jak mezi veřejnou a soukromou sférou, tak ve vytváření tzv. kolážových identit, každodennosti chartistek či jejich hrdinství. Cílem práce je zkoumat genderové aspekty disidentských aktivit žen, kdy ženy jsou zde chápány jako seriální kolektiv, který se střetával s obdobnými situacemi, zkušenostmi a vyvíjel obdobné opoziční aktivity. Výzkumná otázka tedy zní, jakým způsobem, jakými vlivy a s jakými důsledky pro sebe ženy-disidentky vyjednávaly genderové role a konstruovaly rolové modely. Celou práci přitom zastřešuje téma (sebe)zneviditelňování a „tichost“ disidentek s odkazem na diktát patriarchálního řádu promítající se a fungující i na alternativním disidentském poli.

Abstract:

This master thesis deals with women’s civic dissent in the normalization period and views dissent as a gendered area where women intellectuals played diverse roles. It maps crossing prescriptive gender borders, both between the public and private sphere and within the sphere of creating so-called “gender blending”, within everydayness of female Chartists and their heroism, demonstrating so by showing their activities within the Charter 77 movement. The thesis aims at exploring gender aspects of female dissident’s activities whereas women are perceived as serial collectivity which encountered similar situations, had similar experience and showed similar opposition activities. The research question can be formulated as follows: How and by means of what influences and effects did female dissidents negotiate gender roles and construct role models? The prevailing topic of the thesis is making (oneself) unknown and “placidity” of female dissidents with reference to a dictatorship of a patriarchal rule manifesting itself in the field of alternative dissent.
