Protocols and Tools for Protecting Biometric and Location Data on Smartphones

Abstract:

Biometrická a lokační data jsou na chytrých telefonech sbírána za účelem biometrické autentizace a poskytování služeb využívajících polohu uživatele. Soukromí těchto dat však nelze zajistit, jakmile jsou sdílena s poskytovateli služeb. V této práci navrhujeme a vyhodnocujeme protokoly pro bezpečný výpočet s více účastníky, které mají za cíl umožnit výše zmíněné služby bez nutnosti sdílet data s třetími stranami. Naše protokoly jsou založeny na homomorfním šifrování, homomorfním porovnávání a garbled circuits. Dále zobecňujeme schémata pro biometrické generování klíčů tak, aby byla vhodnější pro využití s behaviorálními biometrikami. Všechny protokoly jsme vyhodnotili vzhledem k jejich bezpečnosti, komunikačním a výpočetním nárokům, a částečně také jejich nároku na spotřebu energie na běžně dostupných chytrých telefonech. Například biometrické ověření identity s využitím Manhattanské metriky trvá 0,72 s a 2 s pro 8 a 28 biometrických příznaků, a spotřebuje 0,2 mWh energie, což je zanedbatelný podíl kapacity baterie chytrého telefonu. Dle těchto výsledků jsou protokoly vhodné pro dnešní chytré telefony.

Abstract:

Biometric and location data is collected on smartphones for the purposes of biometric authentication and providing location-based services. However, the privacy of the data cannot be guaranteed once it is shared with service providers. In this thesis, we design and evaluate secure multiparty computation protocols that aim to enable the aforementioned services without disclosing the data to third parties. Our protocols are based on homomorphic encryption, homomorphic comparison, and garbled circuits. Additionally, we generalize a biometric key generation scheme to be better suited for behavioral biometric features. We have evaluated the protocols in terms of security, communication, computation, and partially also energy consumption on commodity smartphones. For example, the cloud-aided biometric verifier based on Manhattan distance runs in 0.72 s and 2 s for 8 and 28 biometric features and consumes 0.2 mWh of energy, which is a negligible fraction of the smartphone battery capacity. Our results show that the protocols are practical and can be used on today's smartphones.
