Canal Geopolitics - Panama Canal, a new canal in Nicaragua and the interests of the great powers

Abstract:

Průplavy jsou uměle vytvořené vodní cesty, které propojují oceány, moře, řeky a jezera. Význam průplavů je důležitý hlavně z ekonomického hlediska. Cílem této bakalářské práce bylo analyzovat geopolitické priority mocností, které se angažovaly a angažují ve výstavbě a kontrole Panamského průplavu a průplavu v Nikaragui, s důrazem na měnící se roli Spojených států amerických. Na základě metody komparace autorka analyzuje podobnosti a odlišnosti v rámci geopolitických priorit a strategií daných mocností. Práce je členěna do tří kapitol. První, teoretická část práce se zaměřuje na teorii Alfreda Thayera Mahana a jeho koncepci škrtících bodů. Dále se pak zaměřuje na geopolitiku vybraných mocností, konkrétně geopolitiku USA, Číny a Ruska. Třetí a čtvrtá kapitola patří mezi nejdůležitější části práce, které porovnávají změnu v geopolitických prioritách a strategiích USA a dalších mocností, které se angažují v oblasti průplavů. Tyto kapitoly se zaměřují na vliv mocností v rámci stavby středoamerických průplavů. Zároveň se v těchto kapitolách autorka zabývá vztahy mezi státy v minulosti, jejich současnými vztahy a politickou situací. Na konci každé kapitoly je část, kde autorka shrnuje hlavní poznatky a odpovídá na výzkumné otázky, které vedou k cíli práce. Závěr práce prezentuje výsledky jednotlivých kapitol a komparačních rovin, které byly stanoveny v samotném úvodu práce. Autorka v závěru práce zároveň představuje možný vývoj situace v budoucnosti.

Abstract:

Canals are artificial waterways that connect the oceans, seas, rivers or lakes. The significance of canals is especially important from the economic point of view. The aim of this thesis was to analyse geopolitical priorities of the powers that were involved and engaged in the construction and operation of the Panama Canal and canal in Nicaragua, with emphasis on the changing role of the United States. Thanks to the method of comparison author analyzed the similarities and differences in their geopolitical priorities and strategies. The work is divided into three chapters. The first one is theoretical and dealt with theory of Alfred Thayer Mahan, with theory of chokepoints and next with geopolitics of the selected states, concretely geopolitics of the United States, China and Russia. The important part of this thesis are chapters three and four which compare a change in geopolitical priorities and strategies of the United States and other engaged powers. Chapters three and four mainly treat the influence of the world powers on the projects of the transoceanic canals in the Central America. These chapters also discuss historical relationships between states and their current relationships and political situation. Every chapter has a part where the author of this thesis summarizes the main ideas and also answers particularly the exploratory questions which helps to explain the aim of this work. The conclusion of this thesis presents the findings from the individual chapters and then consequently discusses the results from generally two of comparisons. It mainly concerns the aim of the thesis and explains geopolitical interests, priorities and also strategies of the engaged powers. The last part of the conclusion predicts the possible evolution of the situation in the future.
