The L2 Motivational Self System Among Adult Czech Learners of English at Private Language Schools

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce zkoumá motivaci vzorku 91 dospělých studentů učících se anglicky v soukromých jazykových školách v Brně. Pro sběr dat byl použit dotazník adaptovaný z Taguchi et al. (2009). Cílem této práce je určit validitu a reliabilitu adaptovaného dotazníku a zjistit, zda může být původní studie replikována na vzorku, který má výrazně odlišné demografické charakteristiky. Instrument byl testován pro validitu a reliabilitu pomocí explorační faktorové analýzy a analýzy reliability. Shromážděná data byla analyzována za účelem popsání rozdílů mezi jednotlivými skupinami ve vzorku a ke zjištění a popsání vztahů mezi jednotlivými proměnnými, které byly dotazníkem měřeny. Statistické postupy použité při analýze jsou ANOVA, dvourozměrná korelační analýza a lineární regrese. Jako teoretický rámec pro interpretaci výsledků byl zvolen L2 Motivational Self System (Dörnyei, 2009). Výsledky naznačují, že ačkoli se některá zjištění z původní studie podařilo replikovat, odlišná demografie vzorku vedla k významným změnám v teoretickém modelu motivace. Toto naznačuje, že by s dospělými studenty při výuce angličtiny jako cizího jazyka mělo být zacházeno jako s výrazně odlišnou skupinou se specifickými motivačními vlastnostmi, které mají potenciál ovlivnit proces učení.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis explores the L2 motivation of a sample of 91 adult Czech learners of English studying at private language schools in Brno. The data were collected with a questionnaire adapted from Taguchi et al. (2009). The aim of the thesis is to determine the validity and reliability of the adapted instrument, and ascertain whether the original study can be replicated on a sample which has significantly different demographic characteristics. The instrument was tested for validity and reliability using exploratory factor analysis and reliability analysis. The collected data were analysed in order to describe the differences within the sample and the relationships between the variables measured by the questionnaire. The statistical procedures used for the data analysis were ANOVA, bivariate correlation analysis and linear regression. The theoretical framework for the interpretation of the findings is Zoltán Dörnyei’s (2009) L2 Motivational Self System. The results indicate that although some of the findings of the original study could be replicated, the different demography led to significant changes in the theoretical model of L2 motivation of the sample. This suggests that when teaching English as a foreign language, adult learners should be treated as a distinct group with specific motivational features that have the potential to influence the learning process.
