The role of the European Union in the development of the Cyprus problem

Abstract:

Rozdělení Kypru na řeckou a tureckou část vyvolalo před čtyřiceti lety problém, nad jehož vyřešením se dodnes vznáší spousta otazníků. Spolu s kyperským členstvím v EU se v roce 2004 stal kyperský problém její vnitřní záležitostí. Bakalářská práce tedy zjišťuje, zdali se EU díky jejím prohlubujícím se vztahům s Kyprem stále intenzivněji zapojovala do řešení konfliktu. Za použití metody rozbor procesu práce sleduje zájem EU o vyřešení kyperské otázky prostřednictvím její konkrétní činnosti. Práce si klade za cíl potvrdit či vyvrátit hypotézu, že se vstupem Kypru do Evropské unie se zvýšil zájem EU o vyřešení kyperské otázky.

Abstract:

Forty years ago, the division of Cyprus into Greek and Turkish sections created a problem which is still unresolved and raises many questions. After Cyprus joined the EU, the Cyprus problem has become an internal issue of the EU. This Bachelor thesis searches for whether the EU was intensifying its efforts to find a solution for the Cyprus issue while relations between the EU and Cyprus were deepening. This thesis uses process tracing to trace the interest of the EU in solving the Cyprus issue together with its concrete activities. The aim of this thesis is to verify or disprove the hypothesis that the EU´s interest in solving the Cyprus problem has increased since the accession of Cyprus to the EU.
