Piracy off the Coast of Somalia - An Analysis of Security Threats

Abstract:

Moderní pirátství v Somálsku si vydobývá stále častěji pozornost médií, jednotlivých států, regionálních i mezinárodních organizací. Roste počet útoků somálských pirátů, výška výkupného i vzdálenost, ve které piráti své oběti přepadávají. S ohledem na význam postižené oblasti, která se řadí mezi jedny z nejdůležitějších námořních tras světa, je somálské pirátství mnohými označováno jako hrozba globálního významu. Cílem této práce je odpovědět na otázku, zda somálské pirátství představuje bezpečnostní (existenční) hrozbu v některém ze sektorů bezpečnostní analýzy Kodaňské školy, přičemž je oblast bádání omezena na regionální a mezinárodní hladinu analýzy. Závěry práce umožňují také diskutovat aktuálně probíhající protipirátské operace v oblasti postižené somálským pirátstvím z hlediska sekuritizační logiky.

Abstract:

Modern piracy off the coast of Somalia is increasingly gaining attention of media, individual countries, regional and international organizations. The number of attacks of Somali pirates is raising, ransom price is growing and distance where piracy attacks occur is increasing. Given the importance of the area affected, which ranks among one of the most important sea routes worldwide, the Somali piracy is recognized by some observers as a global threat. This thesis aims to answer the question whether Somali piracy is a security (existential) threat in one of the sectors of security identified by the Copenhagen School. The area of research is limited to regional and international levels of analysis. Findings of the work permit also discussion about the currently ongoing anti-piracy operations in terms of the securitization logic.
