Failed States in Africa: a Case Study of the Democratic Republic of Congo

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá problematikou rozpadlých států, konkrétně Demokratickou republikou Kongo. První část je zaměřena na teoretické vymezení slabé státnosti a je uveden také terminologický přehled. Dále jsou zmíněny způsoby měření slabé státnosti podle několika mezinárodních organizací. Detailněji je popsán Failed States Index, který každoročně sestavuje Fund for Peace a časopis Foreign Policy. Pozornost je věnována také příčinám rozpadu a stručnému vývoji afrických rozpadlých států. Druhá část práce se zaměřuje na případovou studii Konga. Uvádí nejdůležitější historická fakta, která měla vliv na jeho vývoj, od počátku belgické koloniální vlády, jež v zemi započala na konci 19. století, přes diktaturu Josepha Mobutua a vleklé válečné konflikty, až po současnou situaci. Ta je blíže popsána na základě sociálních, ekonomických a politických ukazatelů v poslední části práce.

Abstract:

The thesis deals with the problems of failed states, namely the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The first part of the work concentrates on the theoretical definition of weak statehood and also introduces terminological survey. Furthermore, ways of weak statehood measuring according to several international organizations are mentioned. The Failed States Index, annually compiled by the Fund for Peace and Foreign Policy magazine, is described in a more detailed way. Attention is also given to the causes of failure and brief development of African failed states. The second part focuses on the case study of the Congo. It lists the most important historical facts that influenced its development ? from the beginning of Belgian colonial rule, which began at the end of the 19th century, over the dictatorship of Joseph Mobutu and protracted war conflicts up to contemporary situation, being described on the basis of social, economic, and political indicators in greater detail in the last part of the work.
