Behind the Wheel or Who Controls the ‘Road’

Abstract:

Anotace Předmětem této bakalářské práce je ztvárnění žen v románu Jacka Kerouaca Na cestě v kontextu rozdělení moci a kontroly mezi dvěma pohlavími. Úvodní kapitoly se věnují rozporuplnostem obklopujícím ‘Beat Generation’ a Kerouaca jako jejího vůdce týkající se jejich vztahu k ‘spořádané’ společnosti, kultuře a zvláště ženám, a je zmapováno všeobecné pozadí týkající se samotného románu Na cestě. Kontrastováním feministicky orientované kritiky a shovívavější alternativní interpretace se práce pokouší ilustrovat fakt, že toto ztvárnění není ani záměrně misogynní ani progresivní. Pro ilustraci faktu, jak autor využívá jistou míru archetypní stereotypizace žen pro znázornění toho, do jaké míry má (či nemá) každá z nich kontrolu nad situací je použito ‘obrazů’ z románu Na cestě. Jelikož je tato kontrola moci situačně vázána, stejná žena může představovat rozličné archetypy, v závislosti na její roli v konkrétní události. Při prezentaci mnoha ženských postav novely Na cestě zaujímá Kerouac pozici nezúčastněného pozorovatele. Být ‘za volantem’, neboli mít kontrolu (ať už doslovnou či přenesenou) nad ‘cestou’ a automobilem jako symboly mobility a svobody vyjadřuje autonomii, nezávislost a moc. Závěr práce se vyznačuje vyrovnanějším, smířlivějším tónem a pokouší se sblížit obě antagonistické interpretace Kerouacova díla.

Abstract:

Abstract The topic of this dissertation is the portrayal of women in Jack Kerouac’s On the Road in terms of negotiating the systems of power and distribution of control between the two sexes. The introductory chapters discuss the controversies surrounding the Beat Generation and Kerouac as its leader regarding their attitude toward the ‘square’ society, culture and women in particular, and a general background is provided to On the Road itself. The body of the dissertation attempts to show that the descriptions of women were neither intentionally misogynist nor progressive by juxtaposing a feminist-oriented criticism with a more lenient alternative reading. Images from On the Road illustrate how a certain degree of archetypal stereotyping of women allowed the author to reflect how much (or not) each woman was in control of her own circumstance. Since the control of power is situation-based, the same woman may represent different archetypes, depending on her role in a particular event. In On the Road Kerouac deals with a host of woman characters and adopts an outsider’s perspective. Being ‘behind the wheel’, or, in control (both figuratively and literally) of the ‘road’ and the automobile as symbols of mobility and freedom signifies autonomy, independence and power. The conclusion adopts a more balanced, conciliatory tone, seeking to reconcile the two antagonist interpretations.
