Comparison of the Thematic Structure of the English and the Czech Sentence

Abstract:

English sentence structure is based on different principles from those applied in the Czech language, which uses inflection. In English it is the word order that identifies syntactic roles of clausal elements and as such it rules the formation of a clause. The aim of the submitted paper is to describe the English and the Czech sentence structures using the contrastive method, and point out the difference between the English and the Czech sentence, as well as the similarities that are observable at both languages. The difference is mainly due to the origin of the languages and their development. English is a Germanic language and Czech is Slavic. The paper is focused on sentence structures, it describes sentence types and marked thematic structures. To illustrate the syntactic differences between the languages excerpts from literary works have been used, i.e. samples of original English modern prose and their translations into Czech, which have been published in the Czech Republic.

Abstract:

Struktura anglické věty je založena na odlišných principech než jsou aplikovány v českém jazyce, který užívá flexi. V angličtině definuje syntaktické role větných členů slovosled. Cílem diplomové práce je popsat strukturu anglické a české věty a poukázat na rozdíly i podobnosti anglické a české věty za použití kontrastivní metody. Rozdílnost obou jazyků spočívá hlavně v jejich původu a rozvoji. Angličtina je germánský jazyk a čeština slovanský. Práce je zaměřena na větnou strukturu, popisuje typy vět a příznakové tematické struktury. Pro ilustraci syntaktických rozdílů mezi oběma jazyky byly použity ukázky z originálních anglických literárních děl a jejich oficiální překlady publikované v České republice.
