Martyrdom or Suicide Terrorism? A Case of Palestine

Abstract:

Tématem této práce je fenomén mučednictví v islámu v opozici k pojmu sebevražedný terorismus, zaměřeno na současnost a oblast Palestiny. Zásadní je vymezení obou termínů, jejich vztahy, případné shody či rozdíly, různé nahlížení. Různé úhly pohledu se jeví jako klíčové. Další snahou bylo poukázat na rozličnost motivů, které tvoří pozadí tohoto jevu, jejich typologie a podrobnější rozbor. Mezi hlavní cíle patřilo potvrzení či vyvrácení náboženské motivace sebevražedných útočníků. Prokázalo se však spíše náboženské ospravedlnění, které je v tomto prostředí zároveň společensky i kulturně podmíněno. Otázka „mučednictví nebo sebevražedný terorismus“ zůstává v zásadě nezodpovězena. Odpověď na ni však nebyla cílem tohoto textu, jednak mu to ani nepřísluší, jednak bylo záměrem spíše osvětlit podstatu obou jevů jako dvou rozdílných přístupů k jednomu problému. První část práce se týká metodologického vymezení, následuje pojetí mučednictví jako oběti, dále pak analýza náboženského ospravedlnění sebevražedných útoků a podrobný rozbor motivů, které k těmto akcím vedou. Dílčí kapitoly se týkají např. ženských sebevražedných útoků nebo organizace a plánování těchto operací.

Abstract:

This thesis studies the phenomenon of martyrdom with regard to its place in the islamic culture. The phenomenon is contrasted with the reality of suicide terrorism. It focuses on the situation in contemporary Palestine. Definition of both terms is essential, just as their relationships, possible agreements or differences. Different points of view are very important. The next aim was to show the variety of the motives leading to this phenomenon, their typology and detailed analysis. Confirmation or refutation of the suicide bombers´ religious motivation belonged to the main goals. Nevertheless just the religious justification was proved, which is determined by the society and culture in this case. The question „martyrdom or suicide terrorism“ is in fact left unanswered. The answer was not the aim of this text. The aim was rather to show the essence of both phenomenons as two different approaches to the same problem. The first part of this thesis is dealing with the methodological conceptions, after that follows the conception of the martyrdom as a sacrifice, then the analysis of the religious justification of the suicide attacks and detailed analysis of the motives leading to these actions. The subchapters are dealing with, for example, female suicide attacks or organization and planning of these operations.
