The Revivalization of early music in Czech lands in the 19th century

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská diplomová práce se snaží nastínit vývoj oživování staré hudby v českých zemích v 19. století. Renesance J. S. Bacha se stala základním impulsem pro zájem o starou hudbu. U nás, na rozdíl od zahraničí, kde se Bachova hudba šířila především na koncertních pódiích, se dostává do širšího povědomí díky pedagogické činnosti. V českých zemích produkci starých mistrů nacházíme jednak u hudebních spolků, které se zasloužily především o uvádění Händelových oratorií (v Praze např. Jednota hudebních umělců, v Brně např. Musikverein), a dále na půdě hudebních ústavů, kde ze staré hudby dominuje jméno J. S. Bacha (např. Prokschův ústav, pražská varhanická škola). V církevním prostředí sehrála klíčovou roli reforma církevní hudby, která prosazovala gregoriánský chorál a renesanční polyfonii na úkor figurální hudby. Důležitou úlohu nesl tisk. Pro tehdejší čtenáře přinášel naučné zprávy ze života starých mistrů. Pro nás jsou kromě tohoto zajímavé i recenze uskutečněné koncertní činnosti. Práce by měla ukázat, že starohudební repertoár se na koncertní pódia začal navracet již počátkem 19. století. Představuje základní přehled pro zkoumání dílčích témat oživování staré hudby v českých zemích.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis tries to outline the development of early music revival in the Czech lands in the 19th century. The renaissance of J. S. Bach became the basic impulse of interest in early music. Unlike abroad, where Bach's music spread primarily on the concert stage, in our country it reached a wider awareness through educational activities. In the Czech lands, we could see performances of the old masters in two places. Firstly, in music associations, where credit should be given primarily to Handel's oratorios production (in Prague it was for example Jednota hudebních umělců and Musikverein in Brno). Secondly in music institutes, where the early music was represented by the name of J. S. Bach (it was for example in Prokschův ústav, pražská varhanická škola). It also played a key role in the reform of church music, which was promoting Gregorian chant and Renaissance polyphony at the expense of figural music. The press had an important role because it brought readers the educational messages of the lives of the old masters. For us, there are now interesting reviews of the undertaken concerts, thanks to the printed material of that time. The work should show that pre-classical repertoire on concert stages began to be restored in the early 19th century. It presents an essential overview for research of sub-themes of early music revival in the Czech lands.
