The position of women in Czech diplomacy

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá postavením žen v české diplomacii, a to primárně z pohledu jejich inkluze a zastoupení jak hierarchicky, v rámci MZV ČR, tak zejména v diplomatickém sboru České republiky a dalších zahraničních misích. Dále práce řeší rovnost práv a příležitostí diplomatů a diplomatek, celkovou respektovanost ženských diplomatek a roli genderových stereotypů, předsudků a diskriminace na základě pohlaví či dalších překážek při výkonu jejich služby. Práce mapuje cestu žen k rovnosti v rámci jejich společenského postavení, postavení v diplomacii světově a následně se zaměřuje konkrétně na situaci žen v české diplomacii. Případová studie pak metodou polostrukturovaných rozhovorů zkoumá osobní zkušenosti, postoje a názory žen nejvyšších diplomatických a konzulárních pozic (velvyslankyně / generální konzulka), dalších významných žen pohybujících se na poli české diplomacie a celkově zahraniční a evropské služby a také expertky v oblasti genderových témat spojených s diplomacií a mezinárodními vztahy, na jednotlivé problematiky probrané v teoretické části práce. Hlavním zjištěným výsledkem je, že ačkoliv jsou si formálně žena s mužem v diplomacii rovni a oběma je tento profesní obor stejnou měrou otevřen, ženy stále čelí některým systémovým a také společenským překážkám, které jim jejich již tak náročnou práci znesnadňují.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the position of women in Czech diplomacy, primarily from the point of view of their inclusion and representation both hierarchically, within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic, and especially in the diplomatic corps of the Czech Republic and other foreign missions. Furthermore, the thesis deals with the equality of rights and opportunities for male and female diplomats, the overall respectability of female diplomats and the role of gender stereotypes, prejudices and discrimination based on gender, or other obstacles in the performance of their service. The thesis maps the path of women to equality within their social position, position in diplomacy worldwide and subsequently focuses on the situation of women in Czech diplomacy in particular.The case study then uses the method of semi-structured interviews to examine the personal experiences, attitudes and opinions of women in the highest diplomatic and consul positions (ambassador / consul general), other important women active in the field of Czech diplomacy and foreign and European services in general, as well as an expert in the field of gender issues connected with diplomacy and international relations, on individual issues discussed in the theoretical part of the thesis. The main result found is that despite the fact that women and men are formally equal in diplomacy and this professional field is equally open to both, women still face some systemic and also social obstacles that make their already demanding work in diplomacy more difficult.
