The Role of the Welsh Language in Contemporary Wales

Abstract:

Velština je jedním z keltských jazyků, kterým se hovoří dodnes a který získal svůj oficiální status v roce 2011. Hlavním cílem této práce bylo zjistit, jak moc se dnes velšský jazyk užívá. Data pro tento výzkum byla získána z cenzů, které proběhly v roce 2001, 2006 a 2011. Pozornost byla věnována také médiím používajícím velštinu a stavu velštiny ve školách a v literatuře. Srovnáním dat z cenzů bylo zjištěno, že počet velšsky mluvících upadá. Nicméně informace získané z analýzy různých elektronických oficiálních zdrojů, které pojednávají o snaze velšský jazyk zachovat, nemohou být opomíjeny. Analyzována byla i historie jazyka, která slouží k uvědomění si, že velština přečkala mnoho obtížných období.

Abstract:

Welsh is one of the Celtic languages that is still spoken and it gained its official status in 2011 by the Welsh Language (Wales) Measure. The major objective of this study is to find out how widely the Welsh language is used nowadays. The data for the research were obtained from the censuses conducted in years 2001, 2006 and 2011. Attention was also paid to the media using Welsh and what the situation of the language is like in schools and in literature. By comparisons of the data from the censuses, it was found out that the percentage of people using the language is decreasing. However, the information about the great effort to preserve the language that was obtained by analyzing various official electronic resources needs to be taken into consideration. Analysis of history of the language serves as evidence that the Welsh language managed to survive through difficult periods.
