Women in Emile Zola's and Goncourt's Novels: Characters Related to Animal Images

Abstract:

The master thesis focuses on the topic of female characters in the novels of Émile Zola and the Goncourt brothers. Because of the reason that in the spotlight of the works of these mentioned authors are often female heroines, we focus on the general view on women of Émile Zola and the Goncourt brothers and on the question why they conceive their works around female characters. We will also try to answer the question, what are the common themes these women reflect, what is the access of the authors to the study of woman, what do they pay attention to and finally, what is their view on female body and female sexuality. In this work, we will also observe the number of animal metaphors again associated to female protagonists. First of all, we will try to detect what these animal metaphors express and what they reveal to the reader. We will deal with the questions, what is the frequency of their use in the works of Émile Zola and the Goncourt brothers, what animals figure the most frequently in their works and what characteristics they represent. Whether these are purely female characters or their associated animal metaphors, in both cases we are interested in common features or possible differences in the conception of the set issues of Émile Zola and the Goncourt brothers.

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se věnuje tématu ženských postav v románech Émila Zoly a bratří Goncourtů. Vzhledem k tomu, že v ústředí děl zmiňovaných autorů stojí často právě ženská hrdinka, zajímá nás, jaký je celkový pohled Émila Zoly a bratří Goncourtů na ženy a proč koncipují svá díla právě kolem ženských postav. Dále se pokusíme odpovědět na otázku, jaká hlavní společná témata tyto ženy odrážejí, jaký je přístup autorů v rámci studia ženy, čemu věnují pozornost a v neposlední řadě, jaký je jejich pohled na ženské tělo, na ženskou sexualitu. V rámci této práce si rovněž budeme všímat četných zvířecích metafor přidružených opět ženským protagonistkám. V první řadě se zamyslíme nad tím, co tyto zvířecí metafory vyjadřují, co odhalují čtenáři. Dále se budeme zabývat otázkou, jaká je frekvence jejich použití v dílech Émila Zoly a bratří Goncourtů, jaká zvířata zde nejčastěji figurují a jaké představují charakteristické rysy. Ať už jde čistě o ženské postavy či o jim přidružené zvířecí metafory, v obou případech nás zajímají společné znaky či možné rozdíly v pojetí a koncepci stanovené problematiky Émilem Zolou a bratry Goncourtovými.
