Development of Political Status of Guam and Northern Mariana Islands and Possibilities of Their Political Integration

Abstract:

Mariánské souostroví se nachází v severozápadní části Tichého oceánu. Historicky bylo souostroví jedním kulturně-geografický celkem, který pojilo původní etnické obyvatelstvo - Čamorové. Nyní je tato oblast následky kolonialismu rozdělena na dvě politicky odlišná území. Úvod naší práce se zabývá definicí kolonialismu, národa a jeho právem na sebeurčení. Poté vysvětlujeme, kdo jsou Čamorové a kde se nachází Mariánské souostroví. Hlavním tématem této bakalářské práce je analyzovat vývoj politického statusu obou území, vývoj etnické struktury a ekonomiky, jakožto i procesy směřující ke spojení obou území. V závěrečné části se práce snaží o zhodnocení možností dekolonizace a případného sjednocení. Hlavním cílem naší práce je provést čtenáře vývojem politického statusu Marian a nastínit politické a ekonomické procesy a sociální pozadí, které tento vývoj dopomohlo formovat od počátků nám známé historie po současnost. Dále se snaží objasnit současný politický status obou území.

Abstract:

The Mariana Islands are an archipelago located in the western North Pacific Ocean. Back in the days, the archipelago was a geografical unit, which was mainly connected by the local ethnic group, Chamorros. Nowdays the area is politically divided into two distinct territories. The introduction of our work is defining terms such as colonialism, nation and the right to the self-determination. Afterwards is trying to find out who are Chammorros and the specific location of the Mariana archipelago. The main subject of this bachelor thesis is an analysis of development of the political status, Chammorros culture and economics of both unincomporated organized territories. The final part of this work is about the evaluation of decolonization and unification possibilities. The main aim of our work is to introduce the reader to the problematic of local political status developement and to its economic and social climate, which has been shaping it throughout the entire history until now. Our thesis is also clarifying their current political statuses.
