The rehabilitation possibility of affected area by Gabčíkovo - Nagymaros hydropower and its development with Danube Strategy

Abstract:

The problem of real and suspected environmental effects of Gabčíkovo-Nagymaros water dam system has been calling for explanation for a long time. Social and environmental effects of the project are causing problems even presently, although the dam is celebrating the 20th anniversary of its operation in 2012. After giving information about the whole problem concerning the dam system from its beginnings, the thesis focuses on the current aspects and happenings on the affected section of the Danube. Now the period of local rehabilitation, revitalization of backwaters and renaturalization of the Danube has been reached on both banks of the river. Finally, the elucidation of the perspectives for the future has to be done within Danube Strategy and with the help and initiation of Danubeparks. It requires not only a positive approach for the protection of Danube, its inundation together with the riparian forest with diverse forms of life, but also the cooperation of the nations of the Danube region.

Abstract:

Problematika skutočných a zdanlivých environmentálnych dopadov sústavu vodného diela Gabčíkovo-Nagymaros už dlhodobo volá o objasnenie. Environmentálne a sociálne dopady projektu sú problémom aj súčasnosti i keď v roku 2012 bude sláviť vodné dielo Gabčíkovo svoje 20 ročné prevádzkovanie. Po oboznámení celej problematiky týkajúc sa sústavy vodného diela od úplného začiatku sa zameriavame na súčasné aspekty a deje na postihnutom úseku Dunaja. Na dnes sme sa dostali do obdobia rehabilitácie územie, revitalizácie zaslepených ramien, renaturalizácie Dunaja na obi dvoch stranách rieky a na záver zisteniu perspektív do budúcna v rámci Dunajskej stratégie a pomocou iniciatívy Danubeparks. Predurčuje sa pozitívny prístup nielen k ochrane Dunaja, jeho inundácie spolu s lužnými biotopmi bohatých na rozmanité formy života, ale aj k spolupráce národov Dunajského regiónu.
