Coping with stress by rescue workers

Abstract:

Táto práce zkoumá fenomén psychické zátěže a konkrétně se zabývá vnímáním a zvládáním zátěžových situací vznikajících při výkonu profese hasiče-záchranáře. Detailně se zabývá příčinnými podmínkami vzniku subjektivního hodnocení situace jako stresující. Teoretická část práce přibližuje základní přístupy k teorii stresu a copingových strategií, dále pak přibližuje profesi hasiče-záchranáře a její souvislosti . Empirická část této práce se věnuje průběhu a výsledkům kvalitativního výzkumu, který prostřednictvím zakotvené teorie analyzoval data získaná z rozhovorů a pozorování profesionálních hasičů. Výzkumný vzorek v této studii tvořilo 8 aktivních tzv. „výjezdových“ profesionálních hasičů. Výzkum se zaměřoval především na faktory, které způsobují hodnocení zásahu jako psychicky náročného a na užívané strategie zvládání těchto zátěžových situací a jejich následků, a to jak v profesním tak i osobním životě. Důležitým závěrem výzkumu je identifikace některých konkrétních faktorů ovlivňujících míru vnímané zátěže s naznačením jejich vazby na užívané copingové strategie. Jako významné příčinné podmínky vnímání situace jako zátěžové byly identifikovány kategorie: „osobní blízkost“, „míra ohrožení vlastního života“, „nepřipravenost“ a „závažnost rozhodnutí“. Další proměnné, které v tomto procesu působí jako katalyzátory, byly identifikovány „špatná týmová spolupráce“, „nebezpečí prodlení“ a míra „zkušenosti“. V závěru studie jsou doporučení pro rozvoj a další působení psychologické služby Hasičského záchranného sboru.

Abstract:

This work examines the phenomenon of psychological stress, and specifically deals with perceptions and management of stress situations arising from exercising of the firefighter – rescuer profession. It considers in details the causal conditions of a subjective assessment emergence of the situation as being stressful. The theoretical part of the work focuses on essencial approaches to theory of stress and coping strategies, as well as on the profession of firefighter - rescuer and its context. The empirical part of this work attends to the course and results of qualitative research which through the grounded theory analyzed data obtained from interviews and observations of professional fire fighters. The research sample in this study consisted of 8 active so-called "emergency" professional fire fighters. The research focused primarily on the factors that cause the evaluation of action as mentally demanding, and the strategies used to manage these stress situations and their consequences, both in professional and personal life. The important conclusion of the research is the identification of specific factors influencing the level of perceived stress with an indication of their links to used coping strategies. As major causal conditions of the perception of the situation as stress have been identified categories: "personal proximity", "degree of risk to their own lives", "unpreparedness" and "seriousness of decision". Other parameters acting as catalysts in the process, have been identified "poor teamwork", "risk of delay" and level of "experience". At the end of the study are recommendations for development and further operation of psychological services of Fire Rescuing Brigade.
