Sharpening Surface Temperature Satellite Images through Anthropogenic Heat Flux Analysis

Anotácia:

Satelitné merania sú esenciálnym nástrojom pre získavanie informácii o povrchu Zeme. Existujú rôzne satelitné misie s rôznymi cieľmi. Každý typ má svoje výhody a nevýhody. Najčastejším praktickým problémom pri práci so satelitnými dátami je kompromis medzi priestorovým a časovým rozlíšením snímok. Táto práca skúma možnosti vylepšenia priestorové rozlíšenia snímok povrchových teplôt, na základe vlastností prostredia získaných vo vyššom rozlíšení. Prvá výzkumný cieľ bol zistiť, ktorý zo skúmaných modelov dosiahne najlepšie výsledky pri modelovaní snínmky. Analýza ukázala že regresia pomocou náhodných stromov dosiahla najnižšiu chybu, napriek relatívnej jednoduchosti modelu. Druhá výzkumná otázka mala za účel potvrdiť alebo vyvrátiť hypotézu, že prediktory skúmajúce ľudskú výmenu tepla prispejú k nižšej chybe pri modelovaní. Štatistické testy potvrdili túto hypotézu a modely ktoré obsahovali tieto prediktory dosiahly signifikantne nižšiu chybu ako modely bez nich.

Abstract:

Remote sensing is an essential tool for efficiently gathering information about the surface of the Earth on a global scale. There are many satellite missions with various types of sensors measuring different metrics. All come with their advantages and disadvantages. One of the most common trade-offs in remote sensing is spatial vs. temporal resolution due to physical constraints. This thesis explores the existing ways of enhancing the spatial resolution of land surface temperature images using environmental variables obtained at finer resolution. The first research question was to perform an experimental evaluation of existing models using data from Landsat and Sentinel satellite missions. The analysis has shown that due to high regularization ability and low requirements for fine-tuning, Random Forest Regression outperformed other models, despite it’s relative simplicity. The second research objective was to evaluate a hypothesis claiming that chosen predictors that model anthropogenic heat flux will aid in improving the accuracy of the overall sharpening model. The statistical tests confirmed this hypothesis as the dataset containing the extra predictors returned significantly lower Mean Absolute Error than the dataset without them.
