The Attic - On Animated Characters and Mental Illnesses

Abstract:

Tématem diplomová práce jsou kreslené charaktery a mentální nemoci. Její hlavní část představuje výtvarné dílo inspirované poznatky z obou těchto oblastí – projekt The Attic, tvořený designy sedmi originálních charakterů a stejnojmenným animovaným videem, jejichž cílem je přiblížit problematiku mentálních nemocí a potřeby pomoci těm, jež jsou jimi zasaženi. Doprovodné pojednání se pak zaměřuje na hlavní zdroj inspirace designu těchto postav, Japonské komerční designové charaktery. Text sleduje, jakým způsobem tyto postavy působí ve společnosti, reflektují aktuální problémy země a pomáhají se s nimi vyrovnat návratem k dětské nevinnosti pomocí estetiky kawaii a její podskupiny yamikawaii – roztomilého zobrazení psychických nemocí a sebevraždy. Ty jsou pak předmětem zkoumání další části textu, především s ohledem na vlivy jejich zpracování v umělecké a mediální produkci na vnímání mentálních nemocí a osob jimi trpících.

Abstract:

The topic of the thesis are design characters and mental illnesses. The main part of the thesis is an art project The Attic created with the aim to open a discussion on the topics of mental health. The project constitutes of two parts – designs of seven original characters and an animated video, both available on the project’s website. Serving as an inspiration source in the creation of the ones of The Attic, the accompanying text follows Japanese commercial characters whose designs as well as assigned personalities reflect the current Japanese society, its problems and needs. As such the characters send a message. Their cuteness then helps to convey even the harshest of them – those of mental illness and suicide – in an acceptable way. Mental illness and suicide is the second main theme of this thesis, the focus being the media depiction of them and its ability to perpetuate or reduce the prejudice against them.
