Psychoactive Substances and the Eleusinian Mysteries: A Critique of the Ethnomycological Approach

Abstract:

Průběh zasvěcování do eleusínských mystérií je díky slibu mlčenlivosti zasvěcenců dodnes obestřen mnoha tajemstvími. O možném průběhu zasvěcování se dochovalo jen velmi málo zmínek. Tato troskovitost pramenů je značnou překážkou pro stavbu hypotéz o průběhu a významu eleusínských mystérií. V současnosti však mnoha pozitivních ohlasů dosáhly etnomykologické teorie pracující s předpokladem, že zasvěcenci během nočních obřadů v Eleusíně požívali psychoaktivní látky, které měly sloužit k navození halucinací a vizí spojených s mýtem o bohyni Démétře. Tato práce se na základě studia antických pramenů, archeologických nálezů a poznatků současné toxikologie pokusí tyto teorie kriticky vyhodnotit a poukázat na problematické aspekty etnomykologického přístupu.

Abstract:

Thanks to the pledge of silence imposed upon the initiates, the initiation into the Eleusinian Mysteries is still covered by secrets. Moreover, sources documenting the initiation into the mysteries are very scanty. This scantiness of the sources is a significant barrier to the construction of hypotheses about the course and the meaning of the Eleusinian Mysteries. Recently, ethnomycological theories working with assumption that the initiation into the Eleusinian Mysteries might have involved psychoactive drugs that can produce hallucinations gained a significant popularity. This thesis attempts to critically evaluate these theories by the deep analysis of literary sources, archaeological findings and toxicological data.
